This weekend, I led a workshop on personal branding at the @hbganttcenter for the Black Carolina Artist Residency. It was amazing! I was comfortable and confident about my expertise, we were all vibing and most importantly, the artists felt seen! I talked about the skeleton of a brand - positioning, messaging, platform strategy as well as what it actually means to build a personal brand and why it even matters. I get that most artists don’t want more rules thrown at them so this part really helped the info stick and land. One of the favorite “aha” moments was clarifying the difference between audience and clients. Which was, unless you’re a service provider - they’re not the same, but you can use your audience to reach your clients. Understanding that distinction changes where and how you show up. Free tip! My favorite part was working directly with artists, hearing their stories and goals in real time. Creatives have always been the heartbeat of my work. That’s why I started @brandbycmg (formally CMG - my day ones know!) in 2021. And I’m grateful institutions like the Gantt are investing in supporting their artists beyond the work itself but also their brand and marketing. Thank you! by @brandbycmg
When people ask me how’d I become a personal brand strategist, I tell them I got my field training on modeling sets. Whenever I booked a job, on the day of the shoot, I’d connect with the client side, specifically the producer and ask “What made you book me?” As someone who’s been modeling for nearly a decade, being “pretty” isn’t really the decision factor it seems like, it’s really just the baseline so I always just really wanted to know - and of course so I could do it again, and be booked again 😬 Especially for this @drjart job, I booked it off of a random selfie I took while I was getting work done at a coffee shop. As much as I really wanted to flatter myself and say it was just my beauty, I knew that wasn’t the full story LOL I remember the producer saying something so simple like “it was just your vibe” and me thinking “Wow thanks for recognizing that.” When I first got into modeling, I was reallyyy into the performance of it all because I thought that’s what I was supposed to do, but as time went on, I stopped caring so much and of course, that’s when I booked most of my career defining jobs. We (me, the other models, producer and CD) ended up going around the table sharing why we were booked and it was all similar stuff. They liked our vibes, what we were into outside of modeling and of course, our type and portfolio. That was when the *strategy* of a personal brand first started clicking in. One thing by itself probably wasn’t gonna do it, but one (real) thing paired with personality, a niche and one skilled thing would probably get someone’s attention and encourage them to buy in. Since then, it’s really been that simple. #brandstrategy #brandstrategist #creativeprofessionals #personalbrandingtips by @brandbycmg
I know a lot of creatives think the most important part to getting on is the “who’s who” and the “what to post” but this really is the cheat code. Connection. Connection. Connection. When you share on social media, (or in general for that matter) people want to know “who are you and why should I care?” and that only comes from showing who you are, your interests, your experiences, your perspectives, your passions. Justin talked about how things changed for him when he just started being who he was, in front of the camera. He gave people a lense into his life and it grew into a mouthpiece. His primary goal wasn’t to become famous or stay booked. His goal was to connect with his audience and all the other stuff were the PERKS! 🤏🏾🤏🏾🤏🏾 As a personal brand strategist for @brandbycmg, I emphasize this perspective allll the time. Once you are clear about how you want to position yourself online (because authenticity isn’t void of strategy) you can go whereever you wanna go. The connection with your audience will take you there because their enthusiasm about you and the community you built speaks louder than your metrics or resume. I’m so glad I got to catch this panel at @envsnfest and even happier that all the Digital IT Girls in the room got free game on how to work smarter as creatives and not harder! Creatives say things like: “I don’t want to chase my dream at the compromise of my finances.” “I just need to figure out what my lane is.” “I feel like people don’t really understand what I do/what makes me different from others in my lane.” “I just want to focus on the art of what I make and not all the other stuff around it.” I have also said all these things. Maybe this post is just my projection. The point is most of the time, it’s not that we’re unclear, it’s that we’re layered. It was through frustration and lack of momentum that I really dedicated time to figure out what was going on: what I wanted to do, why, the impact I wanted to make, how I’m remembered. And I recognize when you’re “in the thing” most of us never have/had space to peel back those layers without being told we’re too deep, too slow or plainly “people probably don’t want to hear all that.” But if you’re a creative working behind the scenes to make advertising what we know it, I know you know, quite the opposite is true. They want to know ALL of that. That’s what Brand by CMG is. Not a branding factory or a niche builder. It’s a place to extract what’s true and then build from there. Your brand doesn’t need to be invented, It needs to be revealed! 🤯 (Sorry not sorry, that’s a bar - gotta give it the excitement it deserves!) I’m here for you. Let’s talk about how I can help you be the creative you really want to be. by @brandbycmg
And so I created one. Over the past few years, Sharing to Share has meant a lot to me and to so many of you who showed up, connected and shared your stories in this space. While my former creative partner and I will no longer be continuing this work together, I want to honor the role she played in co-launching this experience with me and helping shape what it became. Moving forward, Sharing to Share will live as an extension of my personal brand consultancy, @BrandbyCMG, where I support creatives in using their personal stories as an essential part of their public presence. However this gathering isn’t just about strategy, it’s about just having a space. Because to keep it a thousand with you - as creatives we don’t have coworkers. We don’t have a set happy hour where we can just get together and rally cry about the job. We rarely get to share the process while we’re still in it and then when it’s done we gaslight ourselves to just be grateful and say it wasn’t that bad 🫠 That’s what Sharing to Share is here for: a space for us to connect, reflect and be witnessed not just as professionals, but as people who just have creative jobs. IRL gatherings are on the way. I’ll be in Atlanta at the end of August, and L.A. this fall with more cities coming soon. Want to have this in your city? Let’s talk! #sharingtoshare #creativeprofessional #creativeentrepeneur #creativepreneur #nycevents #atlevents #laevents by @brandbycmg
I get that most people think personal brand strategy is just “what to post” and so they either wing it, copy what they see or ask ChatGPT and call it a day. But what I do goes deeper is different and it will help you see yourself, your medium and your POV in a new way. It’s about why you create, how you’re seen and what makes your work feel true across every medium and platform. In this post, I’m breaking down what personal brand strategy can look like for different creative careers so you can stop guessing, start aligning and work with me 🤓🧠💡 → Swipe through to see yours and let me know which creative career you’d like to see me cover next time! #brandstrategy #personalbrand #creativebusiness #creativesofinstagram by @brandbycmg

Imagine you opened my notebook and saw my notes - this is what I’d want it to look like. What it really looks like is that image in the third slide, but that’s not the point. The point is I want to connect with my audience more. In my tone of voice, in my style and explaining what I do in my own words. And so, I’m Ashia, a personal brand strategist/consultant (I use them interchangeably) who helps creative professionals create a brand that captures the why behind their what. I have two unique services to help us get there and I’m excited and passionate about helping creatives know their value outside of their profession. I forgot to add prices: the personal brand sessions are $150/hour and the me-magnet framework is $1,250. All services are virtual and are explained in more detail on my website. #DM me if you want to talk anything through - I’ll respond with a link to schedule a free discovery consult. Thanks for reading and I hope we work together! 😬 #creativesofinstagram #creativeprofessional #brandpersonality #personalbrands #personalbrandingtips by @brandbycmg
I’m recognizing identity shifts hit different when you don’t realize you’re in one. Last year, I just thought I wanted to switch careers, so while the discomfort of evolving wasn’t welcomed, it made sense, and I embraced it until my next “thing.” Yes, I was and am a consultant, but that wasn’t the sexy title I was used to, so I kept myself open-devaluing my true calling, born of my experience, and searching instead for one that would be accepted with glitter and praise. Today, I recognize that what I was feeling last year wasn’t about a career change, but an identity change. I don’t want to be known as just pretty, polished, and perfect anymore. What was once a pretty ad to hide behind (quite literally) has become a self-built prison. But I’m lucky-I have the key! I can change this. And part of that change is doing this- writing this caption, now, in front of everyone. Hi-it’s me. by @brandbycmg
