A teacher, YES!, a teacher once told me, "girls are not good at math" and I believed that. I let that sentence dictate everything I learned or didn't learn.

I MADE IT THROUGH AN ENTIRE YEAR OF MATHMATICS.
Math was a community event. From me texting, "how do you solve this?" At random times of day and night. Having to listen to my math stories as if it was an ongoing reality show. And last but not least Brian putting up with his Missing In Action wife while I was upstairs grinding away solving quadratic equations 🤬.

I only wanted to quit once. But I didn't!

I managed it all while working, maintaining a marriage, keeping a household running, training and competing in strongman and powerlifting, caring for aging parents, and trying to preserve friendships in the small spaces life left behind.

There were nights I studied when I was exhausted. Assignments completed between work, training, and family obligations. There were weekends spent writing papers instead of relaxing. Friendships that had to survive long periods of neglect. Sacrifices that no one saw.

What graduation means to me isn't that I passed classes. It means I kept going when it would have been easier to quit. But we all know I'm no quitter!

It means showing up even when others didn't understand my why.

Today, I can finally say that I did it!

This degree was earned with sacrifice, discipline, heartbreak, determination, and way more persistence than I knew I possessed.

And that's what makes it mean so much.
I never believed I could complete a degree because of math, but I did it!
Thank you everyone for all the support along the way. Family, friends, many tutors, and everyone who listened to my saga!

My right hip has fought a great battle BUT it is in need of surgical repair, so I've gone all in on bench.

As we wind down the holiday weekend I want to spend a moment to remember and honor those who gave their lives serving in the United States Military. This act of remembrance is rooted in memory, sacrifice, and civic responsibility. America is the greatest country in the world because of these women and men.

Last year for my service project for school I cleaned the headstone of soldiers, researched their legacy and updated any registries I could find with the research I did.

It was an enormous undertaking and the research was agonizing, but it all came together for a great service project. I learned so much and people were so incredibly willing to help with information.

One of my favorite stories is Private Riley Reeves. His head stone just spoke to me.

This is an excerpt taken from my Honors Capstone.

*****I think this is one of my favorite stones so far, and I’m not entirely sure why. Riley just kind of spoke to me. His stone turned out beautifully, especially considering he was almost an afterthought when I started.

Riley Reeves was a Private in the US Army. According to the VA Legacy database, he died June 16, 1922, and was buried the very next day, June 17, 1922. Find a Grave lists his birthday as October 8, 1847.

What really caught my attention is that he’s resting beside his wife who remarried after he died. At some point she remarried, yet she still ended up buried next to him in SECTION 4W, SITE 694. For some reason, I find that fascinating.

Even more interesting, her stone reads: “Sarah Reeves, wife of Riley Reeves.” But according to Find a Grave, she remarried John Walters on May 5, 1923.

I don’t know. Something about the whole story feels quietly human. Time passes, lives split apart, people remarry… and somehow they still end up side by side in the end.
