I never really thought I would get into theater when I started acting. But the self-understanding and emotional agility that it takes to do theater is so fulfilling to the soul. For it to be my first show and to be headlining it, was a pressure I felt privileged to have.

Upon the preview, being in front of the audience and receiving all that energy was nerve-wracking compared to our final dress rehearsal the day before. I conscientiously wondered how the audience would think and feel about my acting.

I had to let go of trying to meet everybody else’s expectations and instead focus on what felt right to me. This decision allowed me to get more into Silas’ mind and mentality, and really be Silas in the moment. I began to make new discoveries in my character every night and follow the impulses that came from those. Subtle changes in my actions, movements, the ways I said my lines, and the occurring emotions made this experience fun and worth doing.

Holding on to my artistry and using my lived experience to create something beautiful—that is my job as an actor. To be proud of who I am and what I have to offer. In the end, there is only one Me, and that is the greatest lesson that has been reinforced from this.
