I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to continue to learn and hone my craft in sound design, sound editing, mixing, and foley. I want to thank my collaborators and friends for trusting me with their art.

SESASI

This is a film that takes place in one location: a café. It was fun designing what it would sound like normally and also as the fantastical and psychological place where our lead character Tati speaks to her ancestor. I appreciated being able to record our own café ambiences and worldize some of the music, even if it was just recording it in an empty house. Hanging out with the team, either at Fotokem’s Lodge, or at a Hong Kong café after a late night mixing session, or at the bar after one of our screenings, was a lot of fun.

I serendipitously caught one of Selené’s films at a festival a few years back, and I was moved by how she told a heartfelt and intimate story that tied into broader topics like culture and history. Knowing that she was a fellow CSUN alum (and seeing many of my friends in the credits), I introduced myself and we chatted for a bit. I’m grateful that we ended up working together on Sesasi with such a wonderful circle of people, and I’m looking forward to working with them again.

THE STRANGER, THE LOVER, THE SETTING SUN

This film feels like a distant memory now, in the best sort of way. Tran recently uploaded it onto YouTube, so it’s nice to be able to share something we hold really dear. What started as a one day shoot of an outline of ideas evolved into a short film that was more than just a creative exercise. It was a lot of fun working on this project, especially since Tran was so collaborative with integrating our ideas in his direction. I’m proud to say that all of the sound in the soundtrack was something recorded by us, even if going out of my way to record ocean waves caused me to drop my phone and have it swept away into the sea. No, I didn’t back anything up. But those waves sounded really cool. I’m also grateful to have been able to experiment with some choices in our 5.1 mix with panning music stems and sound effects.

THE SHARP POINT OF TIME

I met Andrew in my first year of college, attending my first film festival at NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, before I really knew what I wanted to pursue. All of these years later, having started my path in post sound, he reached out to me about this project. I enjoyed his previous film, and was really happy to be a part of this one. I grew a lot working on this project, focusing on creating a more dynamic mix with shifting perspectives. Seeing this play at @vcmedia ‘s Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival—in a theater with a big screen and with an audience—helped me hear how my mix translated. It comes full circle now with The Sharp Point of Time screening at @nfmla on July 18!

NO PLACE FOR FOOTBALL @noplaceforfootball

Now streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV! No Place For Football was the first feature documentary that I did post sound work on. I don’t know much about football (outside of this film and the Americ anfootball variety), but the film beautifully depicts the passion of the players and the rising stakes of the tournament in a way that is very universal. Sports, like movies, are powerful pillars of community.

Lately, I’ve found myself having trouble appreciating the present moment. At the same time, I have a hard time remembering the past. My experience of time feels like a clouded state of disintegration. In @brandontran0’s film Handmade Keyhole, the character Alex seems to go through a similar experience. I wanted to show the physical state of remembering and its strange threshold of past and present through sound. I ended up running the dialogue of the film through the same cassette player that was used as a prop on set. #postaudio #dialoguemixing #filmmixing #postproduction #sounddesign by @brandonlien_

A sound redesign of a scene from the film Yojimbo (1961), directed by Akira Kurosawa. I recorded and designed all of the sound you hear aside from the dialogue. A friend of mine suggested that I try my hand at a sword fighting scene, so I chose my favorite Kurosawa film.

I wanted to use this project to practice focus in my mixing, highlighting information and sound elements for emotional effect. I also now have some cool gore recordings of knives and fruits.

I did a sound redesign of one of my favorite scenes from Antonioni’s L’Eclisse by recording and designing everything you hear aside from the dialogue. It’s a quiet sequence, so it was fun building the mood through ambience, sound effects, and performing the foley. It’s hard to walk half as cool as Delon and Vitti though.
