There are few people in life who truly leave a cemented mark in your life. I first knew of @josetv when he was working at NBC 6 in Miami and I was watching his iconic Brandsmart Holiday specials (it was a half hour commercial for Brandsmart, but Jose had a way of turning a canvas into a masterpiece - can’t forget the lightning round). I’d be glued to it year after year.

We met when I was a high school student. I invited him and @roxynbc6 to speak to my journalism class. They live-streamed their drive down in a torrential downpour. This may sound like the norm for journalists, but at the time, live-streaming wasn’t a thing. Jose was always an early adopter. Curious. An innovator. Open minded. It’s what gave him his super powers.

Over the years, we’d grow closer. He was the one I’d call for advice. Career advice. Contract negotiations. Salary negotiations. Is the guy I’m dating dumb (they always are). What car should I get next (we went to see a car I was interested in and I told the salesman I’d take it if he got it to that price. He matched the price penny for penny. Jose and I stared at each other in shock - I guess I’m getting a new car). Friend and family drama. He was always on my side, but he’d always check me if I needed to be checked.

My move to Orlando brought us even closer. Countless nights at Hillstone. Trips to Disney World to watch the fireworks and ride Guardians of the Galaxy, praying we’d get “Conga” (we went to Epcot on the Fourth of July and he sobbed during the fireworks. He then screamed at me “I miss America.” We were sober - I think. I’d make fun of him and it’d become one of our many inside jokes). Endless invitations trying to get me to wake up early to go to the farmers market with him and Fozzie. He eventually learned I’m a night owl. Still mad you didn’t get him a stroller like I asked.

He guided me through my layoffs. He pushed me to launch my business. He’d always make time, even when he didn’t have it. He’s the guy you want in your corner when things are going great, and when things aren’t. by @brandonlopez
