Fat Joe’s comments about using the N-word got me thinking about my own relationship with the word.

I’ve used it. I grew up hearing it. I’ve even fought over it. But the older I get, the more I ask myself a different question:

Why are we fighting so hard to keep ownership of a word that was originally created to disrespect us?

This isn’t really about Fat Joe getting a “pass” or deciding who can and can’t say it. It’s about whether we still need the word at all.

I’m only here to provoke conversation. What do you think?

After listening to Turning My Money Over, a conversation with my brother got me thinking about E-40’s longevity and how well his style has aged.

For me, E-40 never changed his style just to adapt to a new generation — he updated it. The production evolved, the artists around him changed, and hip-hop went through different eras, but he never lost what made him E-40.

Instead of critiquing the album song by song, I wanted to have a conversation about E-40’s legacy, staying relevant without chasing relevance, and why his music continues to bridge generations.

40 songs later… 40 still sounds like 40. by @brandsxplatforms

Nas and Hit-Boy went on one of the most unexpected runs in hip-hop — six albums in three years, with a level of consistency that completely changed the conversation around Nas and his production choices.

But what made that run work so well? Was Hit-Boy simply the right producer at the right time, or did Nas finally find somebody who understood exactly where his sound needed to go?

And now that the run is over, it makes you appreciate just how rare that chemistry really was.

Was the Nas & Hit-Boy run one of the best rapper-producer runs ever? by @brandsxplatforms

Nipsey Hussle is one of my favorite artists, but I haven’t listened to his new album yet.

The project got me thinking about something bigger: How should we treat the music artists leave behind?

Artists grow. Their sound changes. Their perspective changes. Technology changes. Sometimes unreleased music may represent where an artist was, not necessarily where they were going.

My own perspective has changed too. When Makaveli dropped after 2Pac passed, I was first in line. Today, I look at posthumous music differently.

I’m not here to tell anybody what they should or shouldn’t listen to. I’m just here to provoke conversation.

Just because an artist recorded something, does that mean we’re supposed to hear it?

Dr. Dre and DJ Quik have two very different perspectives on AI in music — and I think both make sense when you understand how they create.

Dre has always been able to work with musicians, producers and other creatives to bring the ideas in his head to life. AI can become another tool in that process.

Quik comes from a different place. He’s a musician. Playing, experimenting and creating from emotion is part of the process itself.

So maybe this conversation isn’t really about whether AI is good or bad.

Maybe it’s about what creating music means to the person using it.

Where do you stand? Is AI a creative tool or does it take too much away from the process?
