My aunt @majjoashraf left her body yesterday. Independant and autonomous to the end, she took the bus to go shopping and visit her cousin. Came home and put on her kaftan and lay down on the sofa. She called her son Shezad to come over immediately. He did, but she had passed from this world peacefully by the time he arrived. I’m at the age where the elder generation is gradually leaving us, or leaving us to be the elders, and we’re not actually up to the task. This aunt was yet another impossible, undefeatable force of nature. Constantly faced with obstacles - a father who left her young, a ne’er do well husband, a handicapped son, coming to the UK with nothing - she kept working and kept fighting for her children to have the best of everything. Even as a single mother, she never gave up, providing well for her children but continuing to work from 7a to 1a long after most of us would have retired. Her magical little Indian takeaway was legendary in London. Any family or community member who was struggling was welcome to come and work there for as long as they needed it seems. And somehow the shop always ran wonderfully. She denied herself luxuries but gave her delicious food away so lavishly to anyone who was hungry or in need that she was known in Hempstead for her open door. In 1992, I managed to convince her to fill her Mercedes station wagon full of blankets, food and supplies and drive us down to Bosnia to feed people in refugee camps. Despite the long drive, she never complained and never once blamed me or said she regretted the trip. The last time I saw her was at my father’s passing and I complimented a shawl she was wearing. She immediately took it off and told me to wash it for her. When I returned it, clean and ironed, she said, “it’s yours.” Such incredibly large shoes to fill. She’s gone to join her beloved son Imran and her brothers (my father & his brother), and of course, her own parents. My mother just visited her a couple of weeks ago. Praying for her children and brilliant grandchildren to have the strength to carry on her legacy. @mariamabedi @rachel.abedi #shezadabedi @raphaelabedi (please tag yourselves! And people who are hungry, suffering, ill or unable to support themselves in any way… if we can’t see all humanity as part of ourselves , part of life, we will be responsible for the end of ourselves by @brandwallah

When everything feels dark, look around, you may be the light. That’s the Mevlana Rumi. It’s a crazy time. As much as you can, try to be the light to people who need you. If that’s using your phone to video injustice or sharing posts to raise awareness, #humanity needs you now. There are plenty of things to be upset about at the moment, but our tax dollars funding people who shoot toddlers in the head, bury pregnant women alive, have bumper stickers that say, “Finish them” and also sell weapons to Russia is an urgent one. Thank you @saulwilliams by @brandwallah

This said so often amongst the #sufis we are mirrors to each other. If 2024 is the year of #truth so much is being revealed and understood that was hidden or obscured before. What are you seeing around you? A good quote: there has never been a time when student movements were on the wrong side of history. #endgenocide #columbiauniversity #google #usc #universitystudent #texas #atlanta #freedomofspeech #peacefulassembly by @brandwallah
