Every year, we try to squeeze in a camping trip right before the school year starts, with the goal of getting off the grid, minimizing device interference, and, hopefully, getting some beach time in.

This year, we planned a trip to Big Sur with a couple of other families. Two days before we were set to leave, the Timber Fire broke out. At first, it seemed like it might not grow too much and could be contained, so we decided to stick with our plans. We were also planning to make a pit stop in San Simeon to visit Hearst Castle, a place @leigharae and I love, and somewhere we really wanted Kaden and her friends to experience.

We hoped that after our visit to Hearst Castle, the fire would be contained, especially with some moisture in the forecast. But it wasn’t meant to be. Big Sur Road was closed, and the campground we had booked was evacuated!

Our fearless Camp Director, @jennyray1984, was determined to find us a suitable backup plan. She searched far and wide and came through with a great spot at Bass Lake. So, we pivoted inland from the coast!

I had never been to Bass Lake, so it turned into a great new adventure for me. We had an absolute blast pontoon boating, exploring creeks, floating, painting rocks, playing Uno, riding bikes, making campfire s’mores, and enjoying all the little things that come with being off the grid.

It’s now been 30 days since the Timber Fire started, and it is still burning. Our thoughts and prayers have been with everyone in Big Sur and with the incredible first responders working to protect this special place.

We hope the damage is as minimal as possible and that this magical part of the California coast will be ready for everyone to enjoy in all its splendor sooner rather than later. ❤️‍🔥🌲🌊 by @brandygrams

It’s always rewarding to help friends and clients navigate stressful times—especially when they’re in need of a home and have a lot on their plate.

My clients trusted me to help them through the ups and downs of a month-long mini renovation that the property owner was completing before they could move in. Throughout the process, my relationship with the listing agent was imperative. We worked together to ensure the property owner could place great tenants in the home while avoiding any lost rental income once the improvements were complete.

A little patience, a lot of communication, and great teamwork helped make it all come together.

Teamwork makes my clients’ dreams work! 🏡

Phase three and the final leg of our trip to South Africa was to Cape Town which is an incredible city with amazing, raw and beautiful scenery, great restaurants and shopping for the girls!

1. Setting the table on the last leg of our South Africa trip in Cape Town.
2. We made it to the top of Table Mountain.
3. The view of Table Mountain from our hotel room. When the clouds form over the top of the mountain, they call it the table cloth.
4. Kaden and I twinning at the top of Table Mountain.
5. One of the Table Mountain locals bronzing.
6. Kaden getting her South African handstands in.
7. The colorful Victoran changing huts on Muizenberg Beach.
8. World famous fish and chips at Kalky's.
9. This lady had a soft serve ice cream machine set up inside her VW van. We love soft serve!
10. The endangered penguins of Simons Town.
11. The drive up Chapmans peak is incredible especially when you're not used to driving on the wrong side of the car, on the wrong side of the road. Some white knuckling happened!
12. We stopped to soak in the raw and rugged beauty of being at the end of the continent.
13. Kaden loved all the art around the V&A Waterfront.

Phase two of our South Africa trip - We headed North to South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site to see St. Lucia's free roaming hippos before heading into the bush for our safari. While at @andbeyondphinda we stayed at both their Mountain and Forest lodges. Our rangers and trackers were excellent and we saw the big 5 animals (Lion, Leopard, African Elephant, White Rhinoceros, and the Cape Buffalo). We also saw Cheetah, Zebra, Giraffe, Hippos, Warthog, Impala, Kudu and many more. We would have loved to see a Black Rhino and Hyena, next time!

1. The most dangerous local of all, the Hippo!
2. Pumbaa cruising the streets of St. Lucia
3. The Leopard is one of the harder animals to see while on safari, we got lucky and spent about an hour with this one on our very last day out!
4. Amazing to get up close with these magnificent creatures!
5. &Beyond Phinda is amazing!
6. A White Rhino
7. The Lion King watching over the jungle.
8. We witnessed Cheetahs approaching their top speed of 65-75 MPH while hunting.
9. Leigha and Kaden loving the elements
10. Zebras
11. Giraffe to trying to hide
12. Happy nesters
13. Momma Cheetah and her cubs
14. Elephant party at the local watering hole
15. A very special Father's Day in the bush!
16. Kaden painting a monkey from memory (see previous post)
17. Another one of Purple Grandma's bucket list items was to see the Southern Cross!

A safari was on my mom's bucket list so when we decided on our summer travel plans, South Africa it was! Laguna and South Africa have a special connection and we have made friends with so many South Africans over the years it was nice to visit with them in their homeland!

Phase one of our trip started in Durban where we could decompress from the long travel getting to SA and adjust to the jetlag. It also gave us an opportunity to see old friends at the same time and have a proper braai (SA BBQ)!

1. Our first encounter with one of the locals!
2. About 30 years ago I stayed with Paul Canning and his family in Durban. It was great to re-connect with him on his stomping grounds!
3. Mother and daughter time spent exploring the beaches of Umdloti!
4. Adri Canning showing Kaden the pool of Umdloti.
5. And sharing the South African stoke!
6. Something about blooming aloe plants that always remind me of SA!
7. Thank you Bru's for the Braai!
8. It was nice to get some waves at New Pier before heading into the bush!
9. Family beach hangs
10. Thanks to Van De Wall's and Canning's for helping us plan our Durban trip, show us the lay of the land and shuttle us around for a few days.
11. Those aren't blue suede shoes!
12. Kaden's portrait of the monkey in the previous photo!
