🎉 Exciting news! Today the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art announced an approximately $100 million project that will result in a transformation and expansion of the organization’s 15-acre campus. The project includes construction of a 40,000 square-foot new museum building designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates (@kkaa_official)—the architect’s first museum building in the U.S.—in association with @schwartzsilver Architects Inc., along with significant renovations to the Brandywine Museum of Art’s beloved historic Mill building.

Landscape design for the expanded campus will be led by @fieldoperations and will include a remarkable expansion of the current Chadds Ford campus into a 325-acre public preserve and garden featuring ten miles of trails bookended by the two museum buildings. When completed, the new trails will create a loop through the changing landscape between both museum buildings, as well as the original studios of N.C. Wyeth and Andrew Wyeth.

At the completion of this transformative project, Brandywine will be one Museum with two buildings, connected by a beautiful 325-acre public preserve and gardens with trails and outdoor spaces where guests can learn and find inspiration as they walk in the footsteps of great American artists. Visitors will also have a more immersive understanding of the Brandywine Conservancy’s activities through a new interactive exhibit in the Mill building and by learning opportunities along the campus preserve and trails.

Spending a little time in the "Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth."

Now on view at the Brandywine through January 10, 2027, "By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth" explores Betsy's lasting legacy in visual art and landscape and the creative partnership she shared with her husband, Andrew Wyeth. Betsy was a designer of complex environments and her practice extended to the restoration and adaptive reuse of dozens of historical buildings in Pennsylvania and Maine; the architectural design of new structures; an eclectic collecting practice that shaped highly original interior spaces; and the creation of large-format immersive environmental designs in the service of a consistent vision across two states and decades of practice.

Taking a moment to immerse ourselves in this magnificent view of the Pennsylvania countryside.

Known by many as “Pennsylvania Landscape,” Andrew Wyeth's iconic 1941 painting seen here is also alternatively titled “Lafayette’s Headquarters” in honor of the site’s Revolutionary War history. The eighteenth-century Gideon Gilpin House, visible beyond the branches of the massive buttonwood tree that dominates the foreground, briefly served as General Lafayette’s headquarters.

The Continental Army commissioned Lafayette, a nineteen-year-old French aristocrat, as a major-general during the summer of 1777. Prior to the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, the Frenchman resided at the home of Gideon Gilpin, a Quaker farmer of Chadds Ford. After the battle, plundering soldiers devastated Gilpin’s 130-acre farm. When Lafayette revisited the United States in 1824 and 25, he made a special trip to Gilpin’s house, to express his gratitude to the Quaker farmer for his hospitality many years before.

In this painting, Wyeth created a composite, combining elements to embody the entirety of the Pennsylvania landscape, not just the specific site of the Gideon-Gilpin House. The great tree in the center of the canvas, however, still stands on the site today.
