Braulio Estima became one of the defining figures of his generation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, helping shape the English grappling scene during its formative years while building a career among the sport’s elite. His arrival in Birmingham coincided with a period of growth that helped establish England as an important centre for international jiu-jitsu.

Estima began training at sixteen at Gracie Barra in Recife under Charles dos Anjos and Jose Olimpio da Rocha, known as Ze Radiola. Estima earned his first IBJJF victory at the 1999 Pan American Championships. He won the Pan American Championship as a purple belt in 2002 and repeated the achievement as a brown belt in 2003, taking the absolute title as well, submitting 7 fights under 8 minutes.

An invitation from Alain Pozo brought Estima to England in 2002. After briefly training at Carlson Gracie’s Boiler Room in London, he joined Mauricio Gomes in Birmingham. A black belt under Rolls Gracie, Gomes had established Gracie Barra in England in 1998 and was instrumental in laying the foundations of the country’s Jiu-Jitsu community. Estima took over teaching at the academy, helping develop a generation of British grapplers.

Gomes also introduced Estima to his son Roger Gracie. The two became close training partners, pushing each other toward the highest levels of international competition.

Estima received his black belt from Carlos Gracie Jr. in January 2004 and won the IBJJF Worlds five months later. He captured the title again in 2006 and 2009, alongside the 2006 Pan Championship and European titles in 2007, 2009 and 2011. At the 2009 ADCC, he won both the 88kg division and the absolute, defeating Andre Galvao, Marcelo Garcia, Vinny Magalhaes and Xande Ribeiro. In 2011, he defeated Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the ADCC superfight. He also made his professional MMA debut in 2012, submitting Chris Holland by arm-triangle choke at Titan FC 24.

Alongside his brother Victor, Estima helped popularise the Estima Lock, a footlock variation that became a recognised part of modern submission grappling. by @braulioestima

One of the highlights of His Majesty King Charles III’s visit to REORG, hosted at Roger Gracie Academy, was sharing the day with people who have each made a meaningful contribution to our community.

• Sam Sherif – Founder of REORG, whose vision has transformed countless lives through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
• Mauricio Gomes – The pioneer who brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the UK and helped shape generations of practitioners.
• Roger Gracie – Academy owner, multiple-time World Champion, and one of the greatest to ever step on the mats.

It was a privilege to stand alongside such an inspiring group during such a memorable day. Moments like these remind us that Jiu-Jitsu’s greatest impact often extends far beyond competition—it builds communities, changes lives, and brings remarkable people together.

Appreciate and give back.

🎬 The wait is over. The Beyond the Mat Trailer is here.

This is a first look at @braulioestima Braulio’s story: the training, the setbacks, the spinal injury that could have ended everything, and the resilience that didn’t let it.

Months of filming. Hours of footage. Countless conversations, some planned, some that happened when we’d already put the cameras down.

All of it distilled into this.

Beyond the Mat has already won Best Short Documentary and Audience Choice at the @fightingspiritfilmfestival @sooeyc , and the festival run isn’t over yet @bhamfilmfest. So for now, this trailer is your first look.

And if this is something you’d love to see in full, we’d love to bring it to you with a private screening. Let us know if you want in.

Competing with intention changes the experience.

For Prof. Braulio Estima, stepping onto the mats is not only about showing up. It is about having a clear purpose: applying what you trained, making good decisions, testing your Jiu-Jitsu and pursuing the result.

That intention is what turns competition into a real learning opportunity.

Win or learn — but always compete with purpose.

🔴⚫ One Team. One Family. One CompNet.

🇧🇷

A great afternoon spent with the Boss, my Professor and brother, Professor Braulio Estima 🔺🔺🔺

Always a privilege to spend time on the mats with you, Professor. Today was about working on new concepts, developing my game and continuing to learn.

But beyond the techniques, it’s the knowledge, energy and lessons shared that I’m truly grateful for. The journey never stops, and there’s always more to learn.

Thank you, Professor, for continuing to guide, inspire and share your knowledge. Truly grateful for the brotherhood and everything we continue to build together.
