RECOGNITION KLAXON! It's official, I am now beer guy. I have been honoured with inclusion in the #ofm30 (an annual list of things they like from the lovely folks at @obsfood) for my work in branding/anti-branding @newbarnsbrewery. Thanks to @newbarnsbrewery for continuing to allow me to throw my ideas at beer cans, to @thekernelbrewery for taking up the slack on the rest of my income, to @killianfox0 for a nice chat, and to @honeilly for proving once again that Spa Terminus connections are built to last. And congratulations to all the other recipients, especially page-and-real-life neighbour @celestialpeach_uk (buy her book).
Please feel free to hire me for non-beer-related design and illustration work, as I only have so many beer-related ideas. by @brause513

NOT-SO-NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Ryder IPA. Two tartans! That don't really align very well! And remind me of flannel pyjama bottoms that a high school classmate of mine regularly wore to school!

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Ziggy IPA. If I had known I would one day be tasked with drawing this many dogs via extrapolation of snapshots I probably would have practiced more in my youth.

Some brief internet-stalking revealed Ziggy's eponym to be none other than Ziggy Stardust, one-time Bowie persona, so I borrowed some type treatment from the record sleeve -

and dressed the can in one of Ziggy's costumes (which I got to peep surreptitiously at the V&A Storehouse a few months back)

And ended up with an unintended Gary Larson-ish portrait of Ziggy on the verso. by @brause513

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery & @donzokobeer Psycho Keller. Channeling Pablo Ferro's wonderful hand-lettered titles for Stop Making Sense (he also did title sequences for Dr. Strangelove & Zardoz, amongst others) plus some little Davids in the big (Bavarian) suit (which I should make an animation of as they are roto'd fram-by-frame from one sequence in the film). Stickers have been requested, to which I may comply. by @brause513

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery & @thekernelbrewery Haynau's Retreat. Worlds have collided. The beer being a historic recipe from a certain extinct South London brewery that is the source of a number of Kernel beers created the opportunity for me to reference one of my favourite bits of brewing-adjacent history.

Yes, two drayman beat a notorious Austrian general/war criminal in the street in 1850.

A scene I have lovingly recreated on the can - and the beer itself seems like a bit of a fuck you to European lager brewing (though I don't think most European lager brewers would feel threatened by this intensely stout-like black lager). by @brause513

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery & @rivingtonbrewco AWAY Double IPA. First go at a new and more flexible structure for collaboration beers. Rivington playing 'away' from their gaff at Home Farm in Lancashire. Not sure how I got here, but it just makes me think of early-90s basketball shoes (Lakers colours not purposeful). by @brause513

NOT SO NEW WORK: @newbarnsbrewery /@omnipollo Karl's Mild. TBH I just ripped @karlgrandin off for this, using his spiraling, Japanese family crest-like design from the Omnipollo iteration of this beer; recast in my version of Karl-y colours. Cheers, Karl! by @brause513

NEWISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery 11 Plato Pils. A sequel (prequel?) to 12 Plato Pils, which featured places of interest in Leith, Plzeň & Scranton, PA. This time I chose to highlight six figures of renown from the realms of Scottish and Czech science, art, and sport.
Alexander Bain (1810-1877), inventor of the first patented electric clock and fax machine.
Williamina Fleming (1857-1911), astronomer who discovered the Horsehead Nebula.
Jan Hammer (1948-), composer of the Miami Vice theme and member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Euphemia Allen (1861-1949), composer of the 'Chopsticks Waltz.'
Karel Čapek (1890-1938), novelist, playwright, journalist and creator of the word 'robot.'
Eliška Junková (1900-1994), race driver and first female Grand Prix winner.
Thanks again to the brewery for supporting my silly shit, and I cannot recommend Čapek's 'War With the Newts' more highly. by @brause513

REHASHED WORK: @newbarnsbrewery Champion Brown Ale. I know, I know, I've posted this before but just wanted to revisit it in its DTC iteration. Feel lucky everyday to work with the folks at Newbarns who allow me to wrap their delicious beers in some extremely silly shit aimed at a very small audience of people who squint at the tiny medals on the Colman's mustard label and wonder. by @brause513

RECENTISH WORK: @newbarnsbrewery @finbackbrewery Cedar Pils. Had kicked around various woodgrain ideas for past Newbarns cans with no takers, so it was nice to finally make use of some old bits and pieces. Also wrapped the can with a subtle woodgrain varnish, which frankly was too subtle to photograph but you'll have to take my word for it. by @brause513
