Main features of his reign

Expansion of the Spanish Empire: Philip II inherited vast territories in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. In 1580, he also became King of Portugal, temporarily uniting the Spanish and Portuguese crowns.

The Empire of Brazil was a constitutional monarchy that existed from 1822 to 1889. It was the only independent monarchy in South America during the 19th century and played a major role in shaping modern Brazil.

Brazil became independent from Portugal on September 7, 1822. The leader of the independence movement was Dom Pedro I, the son of the Portuguese king. Instead of becoming a republic, Brazil became an empire with Pedro I as its first emperor.
