As someone who prides themselves in being somewhat eloquently spoken, sitting down to write what feels like the final goodbye to this chapter of my life is less of a loss for words & more of an overwhelming abundance of things I want to say. If you want the long version, I will tell my story over and over again PLS ASK LETS CHAT. But after some intentional reflection, here is my biggest takeaway from the last four years of running:

You get to choose. You choose whether or not you push through the hurt. You choose whether the ache is worth it. You choose what you do and don’t sacrifice. You GET to choose. Whatever you choose becomes a reality that you then get to live with. Having a choice is a gift. Choose to lean into the hurt for a little longer. Choose to work hard especially when it’s the last thing you want to do. Choose to make the come back. Choose to control the things you can. Choose to leave a legacy you’re proud of.

I am so thankful for the opportunity @supiratesxctf gave me & I owe so much of where I’m at today to this university. It is not lost on me how awesome these couple years have been, but more than any accolade or record, I pray my legacy is defined by joy. A joy that became my biggest strength. A joy I got to choose. A joy that had nearly nothing to do with my circumstances & everything to do with who I am made to be. Records are meant to broken & I’m so excited for the direction in which Pirates XCTF is headed. I came here wanting to change the narrative—to establish SU as a force to be reckoned with. And if I’m remembered by anything, I choose joy :) taken in Southwestern University by @breaasteele

To everyone who pulled me back up,

I don’t think there’s a limit to the amount of time I could spend talking about what cross country means to me, let alone this team. I have been surrounded by people who believe in my potential enough to push me to aim high & who were gracious enough to sit with me in the hardest parts of reaching for everything I’ve ever dreamed for. After coming off injury this summer I had no idea what this season would look like. What a blessing to grieve the end of something that gave me so much; to race one last time with the people who have shaped me more than I could ever imagined. To everyone who dusted me off, who called me higher, who sat with me in the lows & celebrated with me at the highest moments: you are forever a piece of me. & I promise to leave everything I am out on the track for one last time this spring🔒 #suxctilidie by @breaasteele

There’s a lot of things that went right this season, but it didn’t feel like it. Really, it just felt like everytime I reached for something I felt deserved I fell just short. It was exhausting and heavy and felt inevitable that I would fail regardless of my efforts. But this season was not a failure :) I learned more about myself and who I am being called to be. I found my joy again. And while there are a million other things I wanted to accomplish this year, AND IM NOT DONE WORKING HARD, I can rest in knowing this was everything I had, and God is good enough to use whatever I am capable of bringing. This year I think it really hit me that I only get to do this for another year. I’ve loved and NEEDED running for a large part of my life. Thankful that it’s not over yet, but respecting that time is limited. Jesus brought my joy back this year. My love for running, love for the people around me, and for myself. Trusting His plan has been the best source of peace I have ever known. taken in Southwestern University by @breaasteele
