NET EXPLOSIVE WEIGHT: THE NUMBER THAT DECIDES EVERYTHING (REPOST)

Net Explosive Weight also referred to as NEW/NEM/NEQ/NEC is the total amount of explosive material in a given charge expressed in pounds of TNT equivalent. NEW is used to determine the minimum stand off distances from explosives; which is crucial to calculate accurately to ensure safety as well as mitigate any time being wasted to exploit the effects produced.

The formula itself is straightforward: QTY (Quantity of the Unit Issue) x W (Weight of the Unit Issue) x RE FACTOR (Relative Effectiveness Factor of the Explosive) = NEW

After calculating your NEW, you plug it into the Explosive Blast Scaling Formula (Hopkinson–Cranz cube‑root scaling) which is: D (Distance in Feet) = K (K-Factor/Empirical Safety Factor) × ³√W (Net Explosive Weight)

A K-factor is an empirical scaling constant used to quickly calculate the minimum safe distance required to protect people, structures, and equipment from the blast overpressure of an explosion.

Considerations for calculating NEWs are:

-Every doubling of the charge requires a 25% increase in distance to achieve the same blast overpressure protection

-Whether charge will be detonated in confined or unconfined spaces by @breachers_up

Marines from Mobile Assault Co. 1st Combat Engineer Battalion detonate claymore mines on a demo range at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. January 2024.

The M18A1 Claymore Mine is used when a directional, fixed, fragmentation mine is required for the defense of bivouac areas, outposts and against infiltration tactics. It is a fragmentation munition that contains 700 steel balls and composition C4 explosive. It is activated by electric or nonelectric blasting caps that are inserted into the detonator well. The claymore projects a fan-shaped pattern of steel balls in a 60-degree horizontal arc, at a maximum height of 2 meters, and covers a casualty radius of 100 meters. The backblast area is unsafe in unprotected areas 16 meters to
the rear and sides of the munition. Friendly personnel within 100 meters to the rear and sides of the munition should be in a covered position to be safe.

Research published NeuroImage Reports (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41809238/) in 2026 examined the brains of military breachers and snipers using MRI scans before and after training.

Both groups showed signs of altered brain connectivity from repetitive low-level blast, but breachers changed differently.

Breachers shifted toward lower whole-brain connectivity, with changes in regions tied to motor planning and visual processing, while snipers showed more specific changes involving the amygdala/salience network (helps detect important/threatening stimuli).

Different types of blasts may affect the brain differently. Occupation, exposure type, and cumulative history all matter at an individual level. by @breachers_up

Marines from Charlie Co. 1st Battalion, 4th Marines and partnering Japanese units assaulting a MOUT town occupied by JSDF and US Army ODA post helo insert near Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan. March 2023.

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is a forward-deployed Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) based in Okinawa, Japan, part of III Marine Expeditionary Force. Serving as the Indo-Pacific region’s rapid-response crisis force, it regularly executes operations with allies such as Japan.

Recent research published in the Journal of Neurotrauma (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/08977151261442215) discusses the most recent findings on how repetitive low level blasts affect the body. Interesting read and the injury mechanisms are still being refined.

The cumulative effects of repeat exposures have more significance than any one acute exposure.

Marines with 1st Combat Engineer Battalion assemble and deploy expedient bangalore torpedos during wire obstacle breaching in Kuwait. March 2021.

The bangalore torpedo is a manually emplaced, explosive filled pipe that was designed as a wire breaching device, but it is also effective against simple pressure-activated AP mines.
