Back at @bierwax Saturday night playing all the goodness. It’s 1000% summer vibe on Vanderbilt Ave allll day. Post Knicks championship glow is still in effect, I am told. Matter of fact, I’m gonna wear the one New York Knicks shirt I got 2 weeks ago and see if I can get over. Wish me luck! by @breakbeatscholar

Sad to hear of the sunsetting of @spotlitedetroit back in Detroit. It meant a lot to a lot of people. Here’s what it meant to me:

Spot Lite was where I had my “we gon be alright” moment coming out of the pandemic. It was in the outdoor ally space — still everyone masked up — with Dez at about 140 BPMs melting us all with the ghetto tech he had made locked inside for the last year or so. We all had been locked inside. But now outside. I remember seeing @mavoneallday for the first time in so so pandemic long with a big hug like “bro we made it back outside.” And all of us out there danced so fuggin hard for ourselves and also for everyone who didn't make it back out. Everyone we lost. It was a kind of joy and sadness you could only dance your way through.

And the record store IN the club. There were so many nights I was there late just flipping through records adjacent to the dance floor, letting all those vibrations hit me. It was a whole other way of being with the music while being with music.

I also wasn’t mad about getting the jump on some new shipments of records right when they came in. (Thanks, @vpatricola, for the 911 texts). There was a big reggae backlog that came in once from Human Head (swipe…). Deep dig. The best kind that ended with the ol’ “Just ring him up for a dollar a record” type situation.

Spot Lite was also where you could just point your out of town friend to no matter the night. Rest assured they’d get something that when they went back to LA or NY or Philly or wherever and told people about their trip to Detroit, they’d be speaking Truth and Goodness. Kind of like Walnut Room was in Philly two decades ago. That’s what I told @times.new.ronin when we RANDOMLY reconnected in Detroit. “Just meet me at Spot Lite tomorrow.”

I remember sitting there watching him stare at the Sheefy art on the wall, the stacks and stacks of new techno records, the natural light coming in from the windows hitting the plants. He was looking around like, man what *is* this place?!

All I could say to try and explain it was “Man, this is Detroit.”

Been on the lookout for this SS LP for a hot minute and it always feels good to find it close to home when you finally do…in this case at @moremorenowrecords last week. Glad I didn’t spring for that over priced copy on The Cogs. Nice to see @beats4daze up at the shop too. Definitely bringing this one out to @bierwax on Saturday playing with my pal @discdolo by @breakbeatscholar
