Freestyle music, also known as Latin Hip-Hop, is a electronic dance music genre that emerged in the early 1980s and peaked in mainstream popularity by the early 1990s. Born in the urban nightlife of New York City and Miami, the genre was deeply rooted in the Puerto Rican, Cuban-American, and Italian-American youth cultures. Musically, Freestyle was a brilliant fusion: it took the syncopated, futuristic drum machine beats of Electro-Funk (pioneered by tracks like Afrika Bambaataa’s „Planet Rock“), combined them with the bright, melodic synthesizers of British Synth-Pop, and infused them with the high-energy tempo of late-era Disco. While the beats were heavily electronic and driving, the vocals were soulful, passionate, and almost exclusively focused on themes of heartbreak, romantic angst, and unrequited love.
