Breakin’ Strings is a New England-based bluegrass band known for their hard-driving sound, tight harmonies, and standout musicianship, led by Cliff Gelina alongside Cody Howe, Sam Acus, Amanda Burtchell, Dan Bartley, Kailey Zercher, and David Bevins. After a 10-year hiatus, the band returned with their debut album in 2022, recorded at Nashville’s legendary Blackbird Studios, and went on to perform at the 2022 IBMA Ramble Showcase and release a string of singles including “Stones,” “Willow Tree,” and “95.” Their new album, Homegrown, was recorded closer to home at Acadia Recording Company in Portland, Maine, bringing together the driving bluegrass and powerful ballads that have defined the band’s return. by @breakin_strings

It was a beautiful night at the fort, with the sun setting across the water, casting a warm orange light over the granite walls and galleries. We were returning to the car when we saw a man with a guitar. We didn’t want to disturb his work, or the peacefulness of the moment, but the music and voice were compelling, so good. He was welcoming and friendly, and told us about a project; 36 songs about 36 state parks. He’d been writing and refining the song and was about to record, all in one visit. The song told a story about the Kennebec, and we caught a bit about the Popham Colony and the Virginia, Maine’s First Ship. We listened and watched, and took a few shots. Thanks to Cliff of Breakin Strings @breakin_strings for a special night. Shot on Leica.
