🚨Announcing the Breakthrough Accelerator class of 2026-27! 🚨

We’re delighted to introduce our new cohort of campaigns for this year’s Accelerator.

These five direct-experience led campaigns are driving change – from challenging unfair student loans to getting justice for veterans harmed by nuclear tests. ✊

They are all using their own experiences of injustice across the UK to speak out and change the system.

We can’t wait to work with them - if you want to find out more, give them a follow or read our latest blog post - 🔗 link in bio. by @breakthrough_impact

For three years, Breakthrough has backed people with direct experience of injustice to lead national campaigns.

Here's the results:

🌟16 campaigns backed.
🌟14 national laws and policies changed.
🌟13.8 million lives affected.

This is evidence that with the right support, direct-experience leaders can be heard, build power, and win national change.

Today we're publishing "Behind the Breakthroughs" – a new report based on three years of lessons about what it takes for campaigns like these to win.

What we've learned about the conditions that support direct-experience leaders to sustain and to build change-making campaigns. And why we believe backing direct-experience social justice leaders matters more than ever.✊

All of the wins in our report belong to the campaigners. We're very proud to have stood alongside them.

If you're a funder, an ally, or someone who wants to see this work grow - we'd love to talk.

Government budgets are full of numbers, and it’s often hard to know what the changes really mean 🤷

But it’s important to remember - these changes didn’t just happen by themselves.

Behind some of the biggest announcements are YEARS of campaigning by people who refused to let their issue go away. ✊

That’s why we wanted to shout out a few of the people & orgs who fought for some of the changes announced:

👶 Self-employed dads and partners getting access to paternity pay

@dadshiftuk @olga.fitzroy & @pregnant_then_screwed led the way in challenging a system that left self-employed parents without the same support as employees.

🎰 Higher taxes on gambling machines

Will Prochaska, @gamblingwithlives & Matt Zarb-Cousin have helped keep the harms caused by gambling in the political conversation, challenging an industry with considerable resources and influence.

🏠 More money for social homes & tackling rough sleeping

@kwajotweneboa has spent years exposing the conditions people are forced to live in & demanding accountability from social landlords. @crisis_uk & Manoel Filho have also helped make homelessness impossible to dismiss as an abstract policy problem.

📚 £15 million for charities getting books to children

@booktrust has spent years working to ensure children can access books, regardless of their background. And Dolly Parton's @imaginationlibraryuk which the chancellor shouted out in his statement, put books into the hands of children around the world.

🤝 Action on the Carer’s Allowance cliff edge

The Carer Poverty Coalition — representing hundreds of organisations — and campaigners like Karina Moon have challenged a system in which earning just £1 over a threshold could mean losing an entire allowance.

All these changes show: campaigning WORKS.

And the people closest to a problem are often the ones who know exactly what needs to change.

BTS of @makeitmandatory Parliament action today 🎬

Together with @killedwomennw they created the ‘RSE Unofficial Curriculum,’ showing clearly how, without mandatory sex and healthy relationships education in schools between 16 and 18, young people are left to learn by themselves from the likes of Andrew Tate. We cannot allow this to continue.

What began as @makeitmandatory founder Faustine creating a petition because of her own experiences has become a movement with thousands of supporters, and now the backing of MPs. 👏👏

It was amazing to watch them share this important message with media outlets, and MP’s like @jessphillipsmp

We are super proud to be backing them on our current Breakthrough Accelerator Programme, making sure moments like this stunt turn into action, and that they have the support to continue building support for this important campaign.

Want to show your support today❓

MP’s will be able to vote for the RSE to 18 Bill on December 4th - so write to your MP now 🚨 link in bio and stories by @breakthrough_impact

POV: Breakthrough’s first trip to the Labour Party Conference 🌹

This week, the Breakthrough team & @kwajotweneboa travelled to Liverpool to find out more about what the current government’s plans are & to make connections for our campaigners.

Some of our highlights were:

💙 Attending some amazing campaigning talks run by Campaign Lab 🧠

💙 Watching some inspiring panel talks, including one with our very own @clubsagainstfloods campaign 👏

💙 Meeting up with some of the best campaigners we know @jacobfreeeman @inquest_org @hillsboroughlawnow

💙 A quick conversation with the PM himself - who told us to keep up the good work!

We’re back and although a little tired, the trip has inspired us to keep pushing forward, and continuing the important work we’re doing with direct-experience campaigners. Next year we want to make sure even more of them are in rooms like these! ✊ by @breakthrough_impact

Today, as Labour's Party Conference gets underway in Liverpool, five well-known faces have added their voice to the campaign for truth and justice for Britain's Nuclear Test Veterans, their descendants and families.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Actor Dame Joanna Lumley, Olympian @damekellyholmes, adventurer @levison.wood, actor Sue Holderness and actor @antonycotton call on him to honour the commitment he made to the veterans before he took office.

They wrote: "The average veteran is now in his late 80s or 90s. There is no time for this to become another promise that quietly disappears now you're in office. It must be done properly, and it must be done quickly."

Alan Owen, co-founder of LABRATS and son of a nuclear test veteran said:

"To have the backing of such well-known and respected faces has given the veterans a big morale boost! We have been campaigning for three generations now.

"Many veterans have grandchildren who are also facing health impacts that have been passed down. But despite decades of cover-up by the MOD, we have never given up our fight."

Today was an important day for Breakthrough-backed campaigner @kwajotweneboa.

He met with @mayorofldn Sadiq Khan and Secretary of State @angelaraynermp - as they set out Government plans to build more council and social rent homes.

Kwajo has been campaigning for years for social housing to be a priority and for the Government to start a once in a generation building programme to end the housing crisis.

Finally the Government is saying they agree and today feels like an important first step.

In England, 1.34 million families are on council housing waiting lists. Action can’t come fast enough.

To see Kwajo’s words repeated back to him by Government ministers matters.

His voice, along with the voice of so many other campaigners from social housing tenants to big NGOs has been part of changing the narrative on social housing.

We’ll keep backing this campaign until every child gets a secure, safe place to live. by @breakthrough_impact

Yesterday @kwajotweneboa travelled up north to meet the PM @andy.burnham and discuss the first steps in the Government's plan on housing.

Kwajo had never planned to become a housing campaigner, but due to his own experiences, he couldn’t ignore the injustice in our housing system.

Since then, he has been in hundreds of homes, campaigning for those impacted by the housing crisis across the country.

We are so proud to be backing his campaign at Breakthrough.

The PM told Kwajo:

“Your dad would be proud of you taking forward this fight... You’ve influenced my thinking on these issues.”

This shows that with determination and perseverance you can have an impact. Kwajo should be an inspiration for everyone who’s trying to make change in the UK.

We can’t wait to see how Andy Burnham continues to work with Kwajo, and hope he listens to Kwajo’s insights on what our communities really need for change. by @breakthrough_impact

The pressure on the new PM to take action is growing.

In just a few weeks, nearly 2500 people have signed our petition calling on Andy Burnham to keep his word to deliver us justice.

We went on BBC Breakfast to share our campaign with the whole country, and we want as many people to see it as possible.

Take one minute to watch and share with your loved ones.

Let’s get Andy to keep his word.
