On September 28, 2000, Likud party candidate Ariel Sharon entered Al-Aqsa Mosque compound under armed escort – a deliberate provocation signaling that the holy site would be under Israeli control under his government.

After years of occupation, expanding settlements, and a collapsed peace process, Palestinians launched the Second Intifada in response. The uprising began with mass protests, strikes, and boycotts. Israel answered with mass repression and violence.

What followed was five years of resistance and repression.

For Palestinians, the Second Intifada was a refusal to accept permanent occupation. Despite driving out Israeli presence in Gaza, its forces still maintained control of the strip's borders, coastline, and economy. The next two decades would be marked by Israeli military attack after military attack on Gaza, ultimately culminating in the genocide beginning in 2023.

September 26 marks the 12th anniversary of the disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa, Mexico.

The 43 were students training to become rural teachers, known as “normalistas” in México. That night in 2014 in Iguala, Guerrero, they were attacked by police and other armed actors. Six people were killed on the spot. Forty-three students were forcibly disappeared.

The Enrique Peña Nieto government tried to bury the case under the so-called “Historical Truth.” But their families and the people of Mexico refused to accept a cover-up.

For 12 years, they have searched, marched, and demanded answers. Ayotzinapa is a state crime and an open wound in Mexico. Until there is truth and justice, the 43 are still missing from all of us. by @breakthroughhistory

Today we remember Edward Said, the renowned Palestinian-American political activist and scholar.

Said's 1978 book, Orientalism, became a foundational text for cultural studies and understanding Arab representation under the Western gaze. But Said's legacy extends beyond his academic works – he was also an important figure in the Palestinian liberation movement, serving as one of its most prominent voices in the West.

Said died on September 24, 2003, after years of battling leukemia. His legacy continues to inspire many in the fight for a world free of colonialism. by @breakthroughhistory

"The devil was here yesterday, and it still smells of sulfur."

Throwback to that time in 2006 when Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez called US President George W. Bush the devil at the UN.

Amid the infamous War on Terror, President Chávez delivered a speech at the UN General Assembly, accusing Washington of "domination, exploitation and pillage of peoples of the world." Chávez was one of the most fervent opponents of US imperialism and an advocate of Global South unity and collaboration, especially for Latin America. by @breakthroughhistory

China commemorated the 95th anniversary of Imperial Japan's false flag attack on Shenyang on Friday.

On September 18, 1931, Japan's Kwantung Army blew up a section of the South Manchuria Railway in Mukden (now Shenyang), blaming Chinese forces.

Japan used this incident as pretext to invade and occupy Northeast China, launching the 14-year War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, or the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Officials gathered at Shenyang's 9.18 Historical Museum where participants struck the Bell of Warning 14 times, symbolizing all 14 years of the war until Imperial Japan's defeat in WWII.

Across the city, air-raid sirens sounded at 9:18am for a full three minutes. by @breakthroughhistory

On September 17, 2024, pagers began exploding across Lebanon and Syria. The next day, it was walkie-talkies. Israel’s Mossad had booby-trapped communication devices and detonated them remotely, killing 37 people and injuring nearly 3,000 – including children.

Western leaders praised the "pager attacks": Trump called it a "great operation," and Sen. John Fetterman defended Israel's operation saying, "If anything, I love it."

Two years later, there has still been no accountability from Israel.

On September 16, 1973, five days after the bloody US-backed coup against Salvador Allende, Chilean singer-songwriter, teacher, theater director, activist, and communist militant Víctor Jara was murdered by Pinochet’s military dictatorship.

Jara was one of the great voices of the Nueva Canción Chilena, a movement that turned popular music into a weapon of social struggle. His songs spoke of workers and the fight for a better Chile.

A supporter of Allende and the Popular Unity process, Jara gave sound to a people struggling for socialism. After the coup, he was arrested, taken to the Chile Stadium, tortured and killed. His body was later found near the Metropolitan Cemetery. An autopsy documented 44 bullet entry wounds.

Even in detention, Jara continued to write. Hours before his murder, he composed his final poem, later known as “Estadio Chile” or “Somos Cinco Mil,” a testimony to the horror inside the stadium and the dignity of those imprisoned there. by @breakthroughhistory

Today we remember the coup against Patrice Lumumba. Just months after Congo won independence, on September 14, 1960, Colonel Joseph Mobutu Sese Seko moved against Patrice Lumumba, the country’s first prime minister and one of Africa’s great anti-colonial leaders. Lumumba dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom, dignity, and self-determination in the face of colonial domination.

Despite his short time in power, Lumumba’s vision for a free and just Congo inspired millions across Africa and the world. But his dream was confronted with deadly colonialism. On January 17, 1961, he was assassinated by counter-revolutionary forces backed by the United States and Belgium. He was 35 years old.

After his murder, his body was destroyed. Only a gold-capped tooth survived – taken by a Belgian police commissioner and finally returned to his family in 2022. by @breakthroughhistory

On September 12, 1924, African revolutionary Amilcar Cabral was born in Guinea-Bissau. He was an agricultural engineer, organizer, and political leader who fought against Portuguese colonial rule in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde.

Cabral, forced into exile by Portuguese colonial powers, helped create the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and later on would go on to create the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

The PAIGC chose armed struggle as the way to fight for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde from Portuguese colonialism. Through armed struggle, they liberated territories and created liberated zones. Cabral and the PAIGC leadership decided that in these zones they should promote the creation of a people-led parallel state, building the agency of the people to create a revolutionary process that would change the colonial and oppressive capitalism that ruled not only their country but the African continent.

Cabral was assassinated on January 20, 1973 before Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde won their independence in a plot backed and supported by the Portuguese.

Cabral believed that revolutionaries must fight for the material benefit of the population – not just for vague ideas. He remains one of the most influential Pan-Africanist leaders, particularly for young people struggling against imperialism. by @breakthroughhistory

Today on the anniversary of his death, we remember African socialist and revolutionary, and founder of the Black Consciousness movement Steve Biko.

Black Consciousness was formed as a social and political response to what Biko called the "mental colonization" of Black people, stemming from not only apartheid rule, also but centuries of racial oppression that fostered feelings of inferiority and dependence. Black Consciousness aimed to "liberate the mind" through the celebration of Black identity, culture, and unity.

In the 1960s, the movement took an important place in the vacuum created by the banning and persecution of the ANC and Pan Africanist Congress leadership.

The Black Consciousness movement also served an essential role in the 1976 Soweto uprising, which began with 20,000 students marching to protest the introduction of of Afrikaans in Soweto township. After violent repression from police, the student protest expanded into weeks of riots and rebellions across South Africa as a challenge to the apartheid regime.

Biko’s legacy was tragically cut short when he was tortured and killed by apartheid police in 1977 at age 30. His life and ideas, however, became “the spark that lit a veld fire across South Africa,” as Mandela later said. by @breakthroughhistory
