A Coast Guard Air Station North Bend MH-65E Dolphin aircrew conducted the rescue of an injured hiker from a lava field near North Sister, Oregon, Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Due to loose rock and steep terrain, the ropes team could neither hike the patient out nor create anchors for a safe rope rescue.

Today, We Remember.

On this solemn day, we pause to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors whose lives were taken far too soon. Each one was a light in this world, and each left behind a story, a future, and people who loved them.

We hold close the families who continue to carry their loss—those who have found the strength to move forward while keeping the memory and legacy of their loved ones alive.

We remember the dreams that were never fulfilled, the words left unspoken, and the moments that never had the chance to become memories.

We honor the first responders who ran toward danger when others were fleeing from it. Their courage, compassion, and selflessness in the face of unimaginable tragedy remain a lasting testament to the best of humanity.

Today, we remember not only the lives that were lost, but the courage that emerged, the compassion that endured, and the unity that brought people together in the darkest of moments.

A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay MH-65E Dolphin helicopter aircrew rescue (medevac) an injured hiker from the Lost Coast Trail near Cape Mendocino in Humboldt County, California, May 26, 2026.

After receiving the request for assistance from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Sector Humboldt Bay launched an Air Station Humboldt Bay MH-65E Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew to rescue the hiker from a remote section of the Lost Coast Trail and transported her and her husband to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California, for further care.

’Twas the night before Christmas, on mountain near shore,
When a call crackled in—someone needed much more.
The radios hummed in the ready-room light,
No crews were asleep on this cold winter night.
The rotor blades waited, tied down on the pad,
While rescuers listened—conditions were bad.
A hiker was stranded, alone in the snow,
With darkness descending and nowhere to go.
The pilots moved quickly, their planning precise,
Wind, weight, and the weather all checked once—then twice.
The aircraft stood ready, the crew well-rehearsed,
Each knowing their role, for better or worse.
Then out on the ramp, under floodlights that gleam,
Hung steel cable coiled from Breeze-Eastern’s machine.
A rescue hoist steady, dependable, strong,
Tested and trusted its whole service life long.
With a whine and a roar, the helicopter flew,
Through snowflakes and starlight, the black sky they knew.
Below lay the ridgeline, jagged and steep,
Where danger stood watch while the world was asleep.
“On stable… on target… hold hover just there,”
Came calm, measured words through the cold winter air.
The hoist operator leaned out of the door,
Eyes fixed below, trained to see more.
Down went the cable, smooth, steady, and true,
Each motor turn measured, each movement in view.
The Breeze-Eastern hoist paid the line out just right,
A lifeline of steel in the dead of the night.
The rescuer descended through wind, snow, and frost,
Toward someone frightened, exhausted, and lost.
With a signal, a clip, and a reassuring grin,They began the slow journey back upward again.
Up came the basket, controlled and secure,
No rush and no sway—every movement was sure.
The hoist motor hummed with reliable might,
Doing its duty on Christmas Eve night.
Once safely aboard, the crew breathed once more,
Another life saved as they turned from the shore.
The patient was warm, the danger now past,
The hardest few moments were gone in a flashAs the aircraft touched down and the engines wound low,
The stars shone above on the fresh-fallen snow.
And someone remarked, with a tired smile’s glow,
“That hoist earned its keep—I just thought you should know.” by @breeze_eastern
