The Westover High School Band Program is excited to announce Ja’Brell Calhoun as our new Percussion Instructor!
Ja’Brell is a recent graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where he proudly marched with the world-renowned Blue and Gold Marching Machine and performed as a snare drummer with Cold Steel Drumline.
His passion for music, leadership, and percussion excellence will be an incredible asset to our students as we continue building the Mid-South Powerhouse. We are excited for the knowledge, energy, and championship mindset he brings to our drumline and look forward to an outstanding season under his leadership.

Blessed to be an alumnus from the most illustrious & largest Historically Black College & University on Earth with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management (Entrepreneurship) and a minor in Liberal Arts. I give all Glory and thanks to God for paving the way — and for every challenge that shaped this journey and all of my accomplishments. Without the Lord’s guidance and the struggles I have faced, I would not be the man that I am today nor have walked the stage. Walking the halls of Merrick Hall, Craig Hall, and GCB taught me resilience, purpose, and the power of knowledge & wisdom.

Music IZ a universal language and truly the greatest of the arts 🎶🔱

1 of the purest forms of expression and connection. Through every beat, step, practice, every lesson, music has shaped not only who I am as a musician,but as a man today.

Kappa Kappa Psi showed me the true meaning of service & brotherhood throughout the BGMM, across campus, within our communities, and everywhere we traveled. The wisdom, self-management skills, versatility, and lifelong bonds that I will forever cherish.

To the Mighty Iota Zeta—— thank you for becoming home. The teachings, the fellowship, memories, & the support from brothers near and far have all impacted me in ways I’ll carry for the rest of my life. IZ taught me how to adapt, lead, and execute under any circumstance — lessons I will continue applying long after college.

To the 19 Dukes—— thank you for laying the foundation and setting the standard. Without your dedication and vision, none of this would have been possible.

13 K.K.S—— I love y’all forever. We came in together, grew together, and made history together. Through every challenge and every victory, y’all became more than line brothers — y’all became family. Seeing us continue to strive for the highest and succeed in our own ways is something I’ll always be proud of.

ItZ Not Just A Name, ItZ A Mentality

BGMM— thank you for giving me the best experience here on campus. The traveling, performances, long rehearsals, networking, and connections with alumni, students, and staff—I’m truly grateful to have met you all. BGMM taught me ACCOUNTABILITY, AWARENESS, & LOYALTY, values I will always carry with me. Every moment felt cinematic, and I wouldn’t have wanted to march anywhere else. I will truly miss my time here.💙💛

To Cold Steel, ever since I first touched a drum at the age of 1 and watched Drumline, I’ve had a deep love for percussion and music. From middle school to high school, I dedicated myself to earning a spot in this section—and I was blessed not only to make it, but to become a section leader and help bring in the next generation. This section taught me what it means to be the hardest and most reliable, on and off the drum. Cold Steel gave me confidence, opportunities, and helped shape me into the man and leader I am today. I’m proud to leave behind a legacy with the greatest drumline on earth. This isn’t just a section, it’s THE STANDARD (AODANBS) ❄️⛓️

To my siblings, I love y’all as my mama had y’all. Thank you for trusting me as your honcho. We’ve been through many Trial & tr16ulAtIons, individually and collectively, but those moments are why we’re all built different. We’re different in so many ways, but together we’re unstoppable. It’s emotional seeing us go our separate ways, but it’s beautiful watching us step into our new journeys. We’re outta here—let’s keep striving for the lives we want and reunite soon. 🖤♾️

🚨PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT🚨

5 years ago today, I made my announcement and committed to attend NCA&T.
5 years later, I am blessed and proud to announce that I will be graduating from the #1 illustrious HBCU known as North Carolina A&T State University here in Greensboro, NC.

To my Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your guidance and for being the head of my life as I have faced many different trials and tribulations in my life and my college experience. Your blood, guidance & sacrifice, is truly what has me standing here still today. Without you, I wouldn’t be breathing; I wouldn’t be the man I am today or walking this stage!
(Thank you, Lord, for all you’ve done for me.)

Dear A&T…
Thank you so much for giving me one of the best experiences of my lifetime. The culture, environment, energy, and people here at this HBCU are definitely one of a kind. Ever since I was a kid, I knew that there was no other university I wanted to attend except A&T. This university has taught me resilience, perseverance, and sacrifices, and that is something I will always remember going into my next journey. Blessed to soon call this school my alma mater!! Aggie Pride 💙💛

Just a kid from Fayetteville, NC, trying to make a way and a name for himself and his family. I’ll truly never forget where I’ve come from.
A first-generation student in his family who has failed many times but has still redeemed himself and persevered through many difficult obstacles. Academic probation in his freshman year, faced issues with the school, financial problems, student housing, many denials, and even personal battles that many people would have given up on themselves or just dropped out…
“But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” —— 2 Chronicles 15:7 NIV‬

I told myself to hope for the best and always prepare for the worst before I entered college. As long as you stay positive, trust in God, and keep your faith, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you in this world.
It’s not how you start but how you finish, and sometimes how we finish can be an even greater blessing than we thought.

May 1, 2021....

So today is decision day and I have decided to carry on my education and passion for band/music even further and march for the Blue and Gold Marching Machine and perform with the Cold Steel Drumline at The Illustrious North Carolina A&T State University 💙💛.
