Book Review - Veil Walker
Author: Brenda Hicock @brendahicock

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I fell in love with this book from chapter one. If you’re drawn to adventure full of magic, Druids, nature, Scottish folklore, a supportive friend group, and good vs. evil, this book has it all. It gives Thor: Ragnarok meets Lord of the Rings vibes, and I ate it up!

Kira, our FMC, meets Owen, a scarred MMC with a very assertive personality, at a celebration of life she didn’t want to attend but went to out of respect for her elderly neighbor, Charles. Their banter is immediately addictive, and they part without even learning each other’s names.

Time passes while Kira helps Charles go through his belongings: old photos, books, and trinkets of yesteryear. Then one day his grandson shows up to help, and it’s explosive. Owen is convinced Kira is taking advantage of his grandfather. They fight, and Kira threatens to leave. But first, Charles asks her to bring him two things: a sword and a strange rock.

Kira touches the rock and is pulled into another realm, where she discovers a demon who has been trapped for ages and now wants out. When she returns, Charles is missing, and she’s the only one with the power to save him. The rock’s magic only responds to her… but she has to learn how to use it!

Thank you so much to The S.P.A.C.E Network and Brenda Hicock for the privilege of being on this ARC team and reading early for an honest and thoughtful review.

This book is a was a heartwarming magical escape , cozy contemporary meets portal fantasy full of healthy respectful relationships.

Kira is such a sweet, pure-hearted introvert that you instantly root for her. It was so refreshing to read a story where both leads are total green flags.

What begins as a quiet contemporary story quickly shifts into an exciting fantasy. Living peacefully away from her past trauma, Kira forms a heartwarming bond with a grieving widower. When he invites her to his late wife’s celebration of life, he promises to introduce her to his grandson, Owen, an ex-army veteran bearing both physical and emotional scars. Owen proves to be the ultimate green flag in every way. But when strange men attack Kira and magic suddenly wakes, her quiet life flips upside down, leaving Owen with a new mission: protect Kira at all costs.

As they embark on a journey into an unfamiliar realm to rescue a friend, their bond deepens into a relationship grounded in mutual devotion, respect, and deep care. Even though the story handles heavy themes like grief, loss, and trauma, it keeps a lighthearted, comforting tone that had me completely hooked. A heartwarming, magical read I couldn’t put down!

💫Blurb💫

A missing friend. A dangerous quest. And a love so great it could save the world—or destroy it.

Kira Blackwell needs an escape. Fresh out of a toxic relationship, she finds just what she needs in Charles, the grandfatherly widower next door whose fanciful tales of archaeological adventure immerse her in places beyond her wildest imaginings. And then there’s Owen, Charles’s grandson, a scarred soldier-turned-bodyguard who crops up when he’s least expected—and always when he's needed.

When an encounter with a mysterious stone in Charles’ possession pulls him through a portal to an unknown world, Kira joins forces with Owen to find his grandfather. Caught between the intensity of Owen’s gaze and nefarious forces beyond their control, Kira must contend with druids, tree spirits, and shadowy wraiths. Even worse, the revival of a mysterious power lying within her, dark and dormant, could be the key to saving Charles—or the downfall of all she loves.

But an even more dangerous battle is taking place in Kira’s heart. Though she is reluctant to love again, she is unable to deny the desire burning between her and Owen, and everything he does only seems to intensify the flame.

From the streets of Toronto, Canada to a magical garden in Scotland, Kira finds love as the depth of her powers are revealed. But when a terrifying threat from another world threatens everything she holds dear, Kira must confront her past, embrace her powers, and risk everything to save the man she loves.

This standalone Adult Fantasy Romance features mature situations and adult language, with a level 3.5 spice. Veil Walker is the first in an epic fantasy romance series where each book features a different couple in the same universe. Perfect for readers who love found family, high stakes, and heroines who grow into their strength.
