Drunk settlers bathe in ‘Ein al-‘Auja.

Yesterday, at around 1:30 p.m. on August 9th, 2024, I was following the West Bank activist Guy Hirshfield covering Palestinian access to water in Al Auja. While taking photographs and video of settlers bathing in a natural spring about 10 miles north of Jericho, our car containing Guy, @raulgallegoabellan , and myself was attacked and our ability to work obstructed.

While harassment like this makes up part of what I’ve set out to cover, this instance is not representative of the level of violence which is conducted against Palestinians living in the region which often includes beatings, property damage, and theft. Harassment at this level is however status quo for activists working in the West Bank.

Since the time of this post, my video of the harassment has been circulated across X and seen millions of times. This comes with added baggage for someone like myself working in the field of photojournalism. I do not condone any hateful or misleading use of the video on social media and remain committed to covering the stories which I set out to in a neutral and unbiased manner.
