I'm so excited about this! I partnered up with The Common Press to shortlist a group of authors for our first ever Indie Authors Day. Like myself, these are queer authors who published their own books independently and I am so humbled to be working with them. by @brengosling

Book Review 📖 What a debut. I won’t be surprised if this book wins multiple awards. I got that feeling you get when you know you’ve just read one of those books that will stay with you, and that you’ll find yourself recommending to others. Reading this reminded me very much of reading a John Boyne novel. The storyline was so rich, exploring themes of racism, homophobia and war alongside great characters that you become invested in immediately. I was left with all sorts of emotions afterwards. I loved the relationship that develops between Roland and Almir. Roland is dealing with the aftermath of a breakup when he meets Almir, who is yet to accept that he is a gay man. Almir is also dealing with PTSD from the war, and it is lovely to see how Roland and Julie try to help him. The way the author portrays Almir’s post-war trauma is incredibly emotional and, at times, difficult to read. I can only imagine how true to life it may be for many refugees who have experienced similar trauma, including those rebuilding their lives in this country today. The level of detail in these scenes really made me feel that the author had done a great deal of research to portray Almir’s experiences so authentically. A really memorable debut, and one I’ll be thinking about for a long time. #ad #freebookreview by @brengosling
Ad-PR product (book review) 'I found Sweet Sweeper a enjoyable and ultimately uplifting book. The clear, crisp prose makes it a relatively quick, easy read, but that doesn’t mean it’s “light”: all the characters feel well filled-out and complex, and the worst part of Almir’s war experience, when he’s ready to recount it in full, makes for a necessarily shocking and emotionally heavy chapter. 'The relationships that develop between the three very different main characters are touching without feeling overly-wholesome or saccharine. Roland and Almir’s budding romance is often “three steps forward and two steps back”, as Roland is navigating a new world as a gay dad to an unpredictable, spiky teenager, and Almir is understandably easily spooked. Julie’s first visit to Almir is excruciating, but they stick with it.' Today's my stop on the Street Sweeper blog tour! AD - GIFTED PR It is my turn on the blog tour for ‘Street Sweeper’ by @brengosling published by @troubador_publishing ‘Street Sweeper’ is a powerful novel that will linger due to its brilliantly formed characters and exquisite storyline. This is the author’s debut book, and it is very impressive. I was truly there with Roland and Almir. There are some novels and stories that touch your soul, and this is one of them. ‘Street Sweeper’ is a complex but simple tale of two people who meet and fall in love. Almir and Roland are both people you want to root for instantly, and there will be plenty of times where I will wonder what is happening to them now. When you linger with characters, even after finishing the book, it means the author has done an amazing job. Almir is a Balkan immigrant who has just recently moved to London. Roland has just separated from his wife, his mother has died, and for the first time, he is living openly as a gay man. Almir has an old soul. For someone so young, he has been through a horrible and traumatic time during the Balkan war. He has made the brave choice to move forward with his life, but he needs time to recover. The flashbacks to his time in the war, with his friend Muzzafer, are both tender but soul-destroying. However, it isn’t paraded across the page as some grandiose narrative thread. It is slightly matter-of-fact. This happened. There is trauma, but there is no in-depth explanation of the war. Roland is just as isolated as Almir but for different reasons. He hid his true identity for so long. His ex, Shirl, has a right to be angry, and his son, Gary, is just trying to make sense of everything. I was enthralled with this book and devoured it within a day. It is not a fast-paced romance but more a steady examination of how two people meet and have a complicated love. I was hooked! Let me know if you pick this one up! Thanks to Anne @randomthingstours for asking me to be involved and for arranging the #giftedpr copy of the book! #streetsweeper by @brengosling
