Look 1 'Hidden #Queen' #HIVunwrapped 3.0 the #runway @cityofmelbourne where #fashion meets #science
About the garment:
The scientist I am working with for this HIV Unwrapped project is Dr Corie Gray. Her research is based on The Sri Kandi project. The word Sri Kandi refers to a leading female warrior in Javenese mythology signifying a modern-day symbol of female empowerment. Known for her bravery, fighting skills and a role model for women trying to achieve equality and recognition in Indonesian society. Cories research involves Indonesian empowerment through a strengths- based, community led approach through amplifying the knowledge, networks and cultural assets of Indonesian women. Fostering pride leadership and ownership over sexual health and well being. Depicting how informal networks, cultural identity and peer empowerment can create pathways for HIV prevention and testing. The Sri Kandi projects colours are pink and purple, so I used these as my colour palette for my design. The garments textile is made from deadstock silk organza and shiny sheer fabric cut into strips and sewn back together to create a textile. This textile is symbolic of these Indonesian woman having different layers within them. How past experiences have formed the person they are today, resilient and empowered just like Sri Kandi. The strips of fabric sewn back together to form the textile also depicts the interconnectedness of the Indonesian and Australian HIV community working together. The oversized sleeves can be worn as a scarf and the
cowl/hood signifies comfort, safety and protection of oneself, how these women are overcoming racism and stigma in the community. I hand stitched purple sequins of the word Sri Kandi on one of the sleeves to pay homage to the research project.

Our garment THREADS OF RESILIENCE walked the @runway7fashion at @newyork_fashion.week 🥰🤭

We watched from right here in Sweden & that didn’t make it any less surreal. Seeing Threads of Resilience move down that runway, representing Sweden, was a full-circle moment words can’t quite capture.

Every story behind it, every stitch, every comment before & after the show, it landed so much deeper than fashion ever could.

Thank you @ohaanyama Thank you @brentallankidd for trusting us with this. @anna.mia.ekstrom for having amazing research @syllacouturedakar @camillawiden2020 @karolinskainstitutet Thank you to everyone who poured into this garment alongside me & to everyone who’s reached out with such kind words since 🫶🏾 I see you & I’m so grateful.

Wow. Just... wow.

And this isn’t the end of the road. September 13th, we’re heading to Melbourne, Australia.

Thank God for this moment. 🙏🏾

No one survives alone. That is true in life. It is also true in HIV care. We officially launched in Rio this week at #AIDS2026.

When @ohaanyama asked me to design for #HIVUnwrapped I thought I was making a fashion piece. I was wrong. I was to make science visible.

Conversations with Professor Anna Mia Ekström & Victor Westergren changed everything. They taught me that HIV care lives far beyond medicine. Survival depends on invisible threads holding each other up: Researchers. Healthcare workers. Advocates. Communities. Lived experience.

That is what inspired my garment that I titled Threads of Resilience. When I first started designing this garment, I explored origami to represent resilience under pressure, folded, structured, holding its shape against force. But as I kept talking with the two scientists, something became clear: resilience in HIV care isn't about withstanding pressure alone. It's about connection. It's relational, not structural. So I moved from folds to threads. From a single form holding its shape, to many threads holding each other up. That shift changed the entire garment.

Every red thread is a relationship. Every bead is an individual story. Deep blue is the system sustaining life. Yellow is the Nguni symbol of Joy, dignity beyond diagnosis.

Resilience isn't built alone. It is built together.

Thank you @ohaanyama @brentallankidd Anna Mia Ekström, Victor Westergren, @raifderrazi @aybiee.photography @syllacouturedakar @karolinskainstitutet @posithivagruppen This garment doesn't exist without your voices.

Sometimes design isn't about creating something new. It's about helping people see what was already there. Process & behind-the-scenes coming next.
