I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

There are ways I know Jesus now that I don’t think I knew of Him before all of this. And that’s such a weird thing to hold because I would never choose the pain that got me here.

But would I want to give back what I’ve found in Him through it? That question is hard to answer.

I don’t know if that makes suffering a blessing. I’m not even sure that’s the right way to say it.

I just keep wondering if some parts of Jesus are only found when life takes you somewhere you never wanted to go. taken in Madison, Wisconsin by @brentdecker

I randomly opened up my dad’s Bible tonight and this fell out. The lyrics to Goodness of God.

Which kind of stopped me in my tracks.

I sang this song at my friend Carrie’s funeral. Her birthday was yesterday. And then I sang it again at my dad’s funeral in January.

Both of them asked for this song at the end of their lives.
And I’ve thought about that a lot. How?

How do you walk through some of the hardest things you’ll ever walk through and still choose THAT song?

Still choose to sing about the goodness of God.

I’ve caught myself thinking about this a lot. Especially right now.

Because if I’m honest, I’m fighting to sing these words in this season. Some days I’m fighting to believe them.

There are a lot of things I don’t understand. A lot I just can’t make sense of. And it can be really hard to look at all of it and still say, God, You’ve been good.

So randomly finding this tonight just felt like a little nod from my dad and Carrie.

Like, hey. Remember.

Remember what we knew.
Remember what we chose to believe.
Remember His goodness, even here.

Maybe you’re in a season where you have to fight to believe it too. I don’t think that means you stop singing.

Maybe you just sing it a little differently right now. Maybe with tears. Maybe with questions. Maybe you need someone else to sing it for you for a while.

But keep remembering.
Because even here, He is still good.

And tonight I really needed that reminder. taken in Madison, Wisconsin by @brentdecker

We wanted to give an update since so many of you have been checking in and praying for our girl.

Harlow’s esophageal resection surgery on August 10th went well - it was an 11 hour surgery, but the team accomplished exactly what they set out to do. During recovery, she unfortunately tested positive for parainfluenza and developed a leak at the surgical repair site. We’re told this isn’t super uncommon, but it does mean we’ll be here for several more weeks.

She now has an Endovac placed at the leak to help healthy tissue form/heal, and it’s checked every 5-7 days. It’s been in place for 6 days so far and has already started healing well - they’ll check again in a week.

Because of where it’s placed and how sensitive that area is, Harlow has to stay intubated & sedated during this time. She has been such a fighter through all of this. We are so grateful for your kind words, prayers, coffees, check-ins and more… we truly could not get through this without the support of everyone around us. by @brentdecker

Settling in for the night shift with my girl.

Oddly, there’s something really special about these nights. Amongst all the beeping. All my worry. All the nurses in and out. I have these moments just holding her hand and staring at her beautiful little face.

I don’t slow down like that at home. I’m usually doing something. Half listening while looking at my phone.

And now I’m sitting here thinking about how much time I probably spend rushing through the exact stuff I miss so badly right now.

I want to slow down more. Study my kids faces more. Listen to their stories that don’t really make sense.

Just appreciate the daily mundane stuff a little more.

Because sitting here, I’d give just about anything for a boring normal day. by @brentdecker

It’s been a while since we’ve shared a Harlow update, and we wanted to fill you in.

Since January, we’ve been making regular trips to Cincinnati Children’s as part of Harlow’s ongoing care - She’s handled it all with so much strength.

We’ve now reached a point where her care team recommends moving forward with a bigger esophageal surgery scheduled for August 10th. It’s a significant procedure, with recovery meaning at minimum two weeks in the hospital. We trust she’s in good hands and that the Lord has good plans for her, though we won’t pretend it isn’t a little nerve wracking.

We are so grateful for this community. As we get closer to surgery & while we’re away, we’d be so grateful for your prayers over Harlow, her care team, and our family.
