This week in Living Classroom we observed seedling growth and taste tested some arugula and kale! K students are continuing to learn about what animals need to survive. The focus this week was shelter, so we made squirrel nests and observed a real nest in a tree behind our classroom! Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 are expanding their knowledge of life cycles by comparing and contrasting the life cycle of Monarchs🦋 and ladybugs.🐞 We looked at a real ladybug pupa up close and some young minds were definitely blown 🤯when they saw what a baby ladybug (larvae) looks like! by @breslivingclassroom

This week we continued learning about life cycles of insects, trees, and plants! We observed Bresnahan tree foliage and made Autumn Rainbows with leaves! We learned how to identify a male vs. female Monarch & observed and sketched a caterpillar in “J” formation in our Field Journals! And finally we identified new growth and teeny tiny seedlings of our fall crops we started last week! by @breslivingclassroom

This week Kindergarten students learned the difference between living (biotic) and non-living things (abiotic). They went on a scavenger hunt around the outdoor classroom and sorted what they found!

Checking out our “guests” in the Pollinator Palace! Also fondly referred to as the “Bug Hotel”, we were already able to spot evidence of different pollinator insects and critters preparing their safe cozy nests for overwintering!

3rd graders learned about and observed how different seed structures support plant life cycles and reproduction!

We spread LOTS of milkweed seeds this week!🦋

Assistant Superintendent Lisa Furlong stopped by to check out what we were working on! These 2nd graders were excited to show her the seeds we’ve been observing.

Seed sniff test!

Our caterpillars have been munching away and are just about ready for the next stage in their lifecycle, chrysalis!

More seed observations!

Living vs Non-Living Things!

1st graders learned about what plants need to survive! They sowed some fall crops like lettuce and radishes and took turns watering their seeds!

This week we shifted to unit 2: Our Community Trees! We will observe this big beautiful oak tree together, as well as several other on the Bres campus, seasonally to observe the changes that come with each new season. We did our first sketch in our new field journals, learned vocabulary words like “chlorophyll” and went on a leaf hunt for evidence of autumn! 🍁🍂 by @breslivingclassroom

Our “Pollinator Palace” is complete! This will provide a safe nesting & overwintering habitat for our solitary bee friends (such as mason, leafcutter, carpenter, and miner bees). These non-aggressive native bees are pollinator POWERHOUSES and absolutely essential for growing our fruits, flowers, and vegetables. Keeping this “house” right by the garden is intentional & will help our crops thrive. Save the bees & protect our precious pollinators!!!! 🐝Our food supply literally depends on it! by @breslivingclassroom
