Most of the places I have lived have been within one or two hours if the coast. But I've never thought of myself as a beach person. I don't enjoy going into the ocean and I don't like laying on the beach for long. However, the first time I laid eyes on the Oregon coast, in 1986, I became an Oregon beach person! There is no swimming required to enjoy it the weather can (and does) change multiple times in the course of the day. The wildlife and sea life are extraordinary, the dramatic coastline with its cliffs, mountains with evergreens growing right down to the beach, farms with happy cows enjoying their grazing as the tide comes in, the sea stacks, the sea caves, the lighthouses, the driftwood, sand dunes growing right out of the forests, and the modest homes with million dollar views... make it a stunning and fascinating place to explore 365 days a year. Two nights and three days revisiting a couple of favorite locations was the perfect way to end this summer. I think I might be ready for my fall teaching schedule to begin now. by @brett_rickaby

The weekend after returning from our road trip, and not-very-distant-fire and high temperatures led us to escape for another hike - this time to one of the first trails in the Shasta area that we hiked on after moving here. It was just as lovely in the summer as in the fall! And cool and smoke-free! taken in Mt Shasta by @brett_rickaby

From Yakima, WA to Mount Hood, OR, and then home. Seeing Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, Three Sisters, Mt. Bachelor, from the road (and others we don't remember the names of) was inspiring and breathtaking. A hike from Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, a walk along White River, a trek around Trillium Lake... A beautiful couple of days! by @brett_rickaby

With only a couple of days left of our trip, the last two days for the most impressive to us. This batch of photos and videos were from our day in Mount Rainier National Park - a jewel that we will definitely return to -as as well as a few on the way there and back from our Airbnb in Yakima. Palouse Falls was a stunning surprise after driving through so many miles of rolling wheat fields with no hint of a river anywhere! Suddenly, there it was - and it is impressive! Also surprising to see the marmots there - it was hot that day and we have only seen them at high elevations where it is much cooler. taken in Palouse Falls State Park by @brett_rickaby

Our destination in Sandpoint, Idaho was a beautiful room in a lovely home, and Beth was our host. Not only did we hit it off from the moment we entered her art-filled home full of special and unique collections, we were introduced to her music ( which was our soundtrack for the remainder of our trip ) and left feeling profoundly affected by our connections. An evening filled with deep conversations, the sharing of very personal experiences and revelations, and the acknowledgment that we were all experiencing something magical, made it difficult to leave the next morning, when the sharing began again over coffee.
We are so grateful for that beautiful interaction with someone we hope to connect with again someday. I can't put links to her music on Spotify here, but if you are interested, look up Wild Roses or Beth and Cinde.

As we headed to our next destination, Sandpoint, Idaho, we saw signs for Kootenai Falls. If you know us, you know we love us some waterfalls! We knew nothing about the Kootenai River or the Falls and we were quickly losing our day time but decided to stop. It was about a half a mile, maybe a little less, from where we had parked, hiking on an easy trail, crossing a bridge over train tracks ( with several flights of stairs between landings and running to save time, that was the hardest part! ), we were stunned by this incredible river and the Falls! I so wish we could have explored more -- it was breathtaking! The amount of water moving past us was difficult to comprehend.
