Had a few hours this evening with the homie @jazz.cello for the greatest fall tune of all times, The Great Pumpkin Waltz. Enjoy our arrangement!

🎸One chorus of ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’

I’ve been learning a lot from transcribing Jim Hall recently. (More chord transcriptions coming.) I’ve always listened to him a lot and can sing most of his solos, but I never felt like Jim was “to be transcribed” 😂 only to be enjoyed. Learning “One Morning in May” has really opened my eyes and ears to a fresh way of combining triads and fourths.

In this chorus I’m thinking pure Jim in terms of those combinations, using fourths as a soloing tool as well as from an accompanying perspective. In the B section, I’m using a triad sequence that he does a version of in a few waltz tunes. Enjoy 🤝

PS I’m teaching these concepts on @tuudrapp

Thanks for all y’all’s support on my last post! I think I’ve replied to everyone who DM’d about guitar lessons, but if I missed you, I’ll go back through my messages tonight!

Here’s part 2: the bridge and final A section of the most swinging comping ever recorded. The one and only Jim Hall accompanying Bill Evans on “My Funny Valentine.”

Jim Hall swinging hard on “My Funny Valentine” from Undercurrent with Bill Evans.

Probably Jim’s most iconic comping moment, when they shift into swing around the three-minute mark.

By far the hardest chord transcription I’ve tackled, but I’m getting so much out of it so far. More to come.

2 part series on this tune!

This is the first 32 bars of the late great Jim Hall’s comping on ‘One Morning In May’. Everything about it is brilliant! I’ll be teaching lessons on this for anyone interested.

@jessevanruller is one of my all time favorite musicians. He has such insane swing feel and incredibly interesting phrases/harmonic choices! Check him out if you haven’t listened to him in depth. He also writes amazing original tunes.
