I’m a designer of many things. Interiors, jewelry, and flowers are just a few of the things I focus on. Why limit your capabilities and talents?

Banana Bread! How many of you purposely buy bananas for the making of banana bread? I like to give the loaves a generous topping of turbinado sugar for a satisfying crunch. Also, double your recipe and freeze a loaf after baking. There’s nothing better than a warm slice slathered in butter!

These two varieties of carnations are absolutely perfect in this space! I also like their un arranged simplicity.

Meet Becky! This month’s Kitchen Playmate! Becky loves a peck’n and a scratch’n on warm summer days, long sitting spells in the coop and being known as a big layer. When she’s not roosting, she can be found looking after her man, Rusty, the rooster!
This scenario reminds me of the extremely sad story of the playmate Dorothy Stratton. Oh well….It’s roasted chicken for dinner tonight! Ain’t she purty?

And that’s a wrap for Stock 2026! We ended up with 12 and a 1/2 quarts of liquid gold! And, it’s all ready for the freezer! An added bonus is the rendered chicken fat, or as some call it, schmaltz. I generally put it in mason jars and keep it in the freezer along with the stock. One thing I use it for are the dumplings in Chicken & Dumplings. I substitute some of the fat in the recipe for chicken fat. It adds a richness that can’t be beat. Frying potatoes with it is also delicious. A touch in biscuits is nice too.

Stock Day! I always wait for the cooler days to make a big pot of stock. If you aren’t making your own stock, you really should be. Save all those scraps and get cooking! This is my big batch of chicken stock. It is probably the most versatile stock to have in your kitchen. Celery, onions, parsley, a couple of bay leaves and a tablespoon of black pepper corns round out the mix. I also throw in my Parmesan cheese rinds. I let mine simmer on the stove all day. The end result is an extremely gelatinous and full flavored stock. It really makes a difference in soups, sauces, and gravies.

Who planted eggplants this year? I love Japanese eggplant. I especially love them grilled with a little ponzu sprinkled over them. There were around 30 in this harvest. They have been producing readily throughout the season. Now I’m roasting them and scraping the flesh out with a bench scraper. This too will go in the freezer.

Since @ryanmccallister1 posted his bell pepper harvest, I thought I’d post ours! These, 13+ pounds of them, have all been processed and are now vacuum sealed in the freezer. These will be so good for soups and stews this winter.
