Some career advice is soft. Safe. Easy to ignore.
This isn’t that.
Just the uncomfortable stuff most people already know deep down but nobody says out loud.

Some genuinely unpopular opinions about sales, unfiltered.

I don’t necessarily agree with all of these myself, but they’re worth saying out loud anyway.

What do corporate buzzwords actually mean?

Corporate jargon is just a fancy way of dancing around the truth.
Half of it is people being polite about something that’s actually pretty harsh, and the other half is covering up the reality.
“Restructure”, “high performer”, “we’re like a family”... I’ve translated a few.

Tell me which one you’ve heard the most.

Ten commandments of every office that nobody writes down but everyone expects you to follow.
Comment the commandment I left off.

Every workplace has its own sins.
These are the ones that get people talking.

Ranking things managers say, from immediate resignation to reluctantly approved.
Comment the manager phrase I left off.

Every workplace has at least one of these on repeat.
Where would you put them?

Unwritten rules of every office that nobody tells you but everyone follows.
Comment the one you learned the hard way.

Every workplace has them. Nobody writes them down, and you only find out when you break one.

Scariest things in sales, and every salesperson has lived through at least one.
Comment the one that still haunts you.

Yes, I know Aussies don’t really do Halloween.
My kids do, so we do, and I’m not wasting the algorithm push.
Happy Halloween!

What do clients say when they’re actually going to buy?

I’ve ranked the client phrases in sales, from “just send me an email” to “where do I sign”.
Every salesperson knows a few of these are never going to close, and a few are as good as money in the bank.
I’ve heard every one of them more times than I’d like to admit.

Are sales targets realistic?

Sometimes they are and sometimes they’re not.
Targets aren’t the same for everyone.
They’re based on pay, experience and how good you are, and once you hit yours, it goes up.
That puts real stress on your job, and some days they’re hard to reach and some days they’re not.
But at the end of the day, the company’s employing you to make money, and you can’t forget that.
It’s a funny thing, and I’ve lived both sides of it.

What are the unwritten rules of every office?

Every workplace runs on rules nobody writes down: who gets noticed, who gets the work and why the meeting exists in the first place.
Most of these I’ve seen first-hand, and a few I’d rather not admit I agree with.

What does the end of the month feel like in sales?

It’s the most stressful week of the year if you’re behind on target.
Right now I’m two deals ahead with a week to go, so I’m feeling pretty good.
But I’ve been on the other side of it, and it’s not a great feeling.
When your commission, your standing and your future at the company are all riding on the last few days, it’s close to anxiety.
If you’re behind this month, you’re not the only one.

What are the red flags of a bad sales course?

I did a really good sales course not so long ago, so I’m not against training.
But there are a lot of fucking dodgy ones out there,
and the red flags are always the same: income screenshots, a “proven system” and a lot of mindset talk with nothing behind it.
