Lasers, 3D-printed tortoise shells, grape flavoring decoys? No, it’s not a sci-fi movie...it’s real conservation.

ECO-HACK!, directed by Josh Izenberg and Brett Marty, follows a team of biologists using wildly inventive tech to protect endangered baby desert tortoises from predatory ravens. A DOC NYC alum now streaming on @yahoo x @nonfictionhotlist.

So darn thrilled to be heading to @camdeniff and @climatefilmfestnyc this weekend with our new film Plant Life. Two incredible festivals.

And if you’re in NYC, you can also catch my co-director @onlyhumanfilm & I at the @the_explorers_club for another @climateweek screening on Tues 9/22 at 5pm + a chat afterwards with the @salkinstitute scientists behind it.

Very proud of this film, many years in the making — and so very honored to learn it was just recently nominated for a few incredible awards at @wildscreenorg @jacksonwildorg @silbersalzfestival @impactdocsawards

Huge thanks to Joanne, her, family, and the cadre of brilliant scientists at HPI — and everyone at @salkinstitute for trusting us behind the scenes.

Can’t say thank you enough to @tangledbankhhmi @catapultfilmfund @berkeleyfilmfoundation @theredfordcenter for helping us make it all happen — and especially to everyone who worked so hard on the film. @photophilbriggs @ddonaa @media_rat @steffseq @chad.cohen007 @globalmechanic @brucewgalcock amandacomposer @edwardsdan @jeremiahmoore @umami.color @armincreates @springerdocs @biolapse @speculativefilms

Though on different landscapes, in some ways very much a spiritual sequel to our last film Eco-Hack! about a zany field biologist out in the Mojave — both films about incredibly clever scientists trying to solve some of the most challenging ecological problems facing our planet, with hard science and/or quirky gadgets, big and small. You can also catch Eco-Hack!, just released by @nonfictionhotlist and @yahoo … Very excited for both to be finally getting out into the world. by @brettmarty

Today, our new film Town Square (32 minutes) is finally available online as a @vimeostaffpicks

10 years ago, I heard about a memory care professional in San Diego, building a fake 1950s town so people with Alzheimer's and dementia could spend time in a world they could still remember. We proceeded to follow memory care expert Scott Tarde and his team as they built Town Square, scraping together the money, ensuring they could build the set with enough detail to feel real, opening the doors, and not knowing for sure exactly how it would be received.

It was a true experiment, a leap of faith, and to us, it really embodied an imaginative take on care.

What we didn't expect was how much the film would really end up being about the families — Marie and Dail, Tanya and Mary, Geri and Frank, Sheri and Susie — and many others.

If you're caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia right now, you may recognize your experience in theirs.

If you're expecting a depressing film about a difficult disease, you might be surprised. There are a lot of laughs here. It turns out that building a faux 1950s city makes for a pretty fun watch.

So we're happy to finally get to share our short documentary — Town Square — with the world. It's 32 minutes, it's played at some great festivals, and now we're releasing it online for free, with lots of gratitude to the Vimeo Staff Pick team.

If you enjoy it, or it makes you feel something, please share it with anyone who you think would want to see it.

Full film at the link in bio. by @brettmarty

It’s official! Our new doc project Plant Life received a @CatapultFilmFund Development Grant. Massive thanks to everyone at Catapult! #CatapultDevelopment2023 (link in bio)

“Plant geneticist Dr. Joanne Chory and her lab are on a mission — supercharging crop plants to pull carbon from the atmosphere and sequester it deep in Earth’s soil, potentially halving the pace of climate change. But time is running out. And it’s not just the ticking clock of ecological collapse: Dr. Chory’s has advanced Parkinson’s disease.” Catapult Film Fund Development Grant 2023 by @brettmarty
