Grainmaker 2024 was once again peak good times. Gathering with friends—brewers and distillers, farmers, maltsters, industry hot shots, and their families to celebrate is a joy.

Pro tip: stretch before attempting a slip and slide, and always ride in the back of the truck to a malt field when given the chance. And maybe pack some rain gear JUST in case.

Big thanks to these guys for making it all happen:

Goodbye, Golden Handle, and thank you.

I came aboard as the brewer for Golden Handle when they relaunched in their new space and replaced from the original Golden Handle Project to Golden Handle Brewing. I had an amazing experience learning a new system, learning a new customer base and refining recipes, learning what I would and would not do if I ever open my own brewery—while having the extreme honor of working with some of the most awesome people I’ve ever gotten to meet.

Unfortunately, the board of the co-op that owns Golden Handle decided the experiment was too costly to continue, and had to pull the plug for the good of the rest of the co-op. I’m taking this opportunity to step back from the brewing and production side of the industry. Community Pint is still rocking, so don’t worry! I’ll still be around. But I’m excited to drink and enjoy OTHER brewers’ work instead of making my own for a while.

To everyone that has supported Golden Handle, raised a pint of my beer, and everyone who has been a friend along the way: Cheers!

Boots with shorts? October days at 70+ degrees? A dark beer that’s a lager? We say heck yes to (apparent) contradictions.

Vague Shadows from Imagine Nation Brewing company is perfect for this. A Czech Dark lager brewed with floor malted Bohemian barley and Czech Saaz hops. Smooth, cohesive interpretation of the classic style that boasts intense malty flavors of chocolate, creamy espresso, and toasted bread, with a pleasant, earthy accent. by @brew.calling

Forgot what a summer brew day mash in can feel like. Spoiler alert: it’s hot. Worth it for the cool drink later, though!

Any of my friends make bandanas? 😂

That “mash in is done” feeling…

Brewed a hazy IPA today, and ALMOST maxed out the mash tun. Today’s grain bill added 100 more lbs of malt than I’ve used before. The danger with hazy IPA is that the more malt, the more protein, and the more potential for a gummy mess in the mash tun. A stuck mash is a nightmare—it’s difficult to transfer, and leaves a MESS. Happy to have avoided that today.

Cheers!

A brewer’s work is never done!

All dressed up to host a wrap party and we needed a fresh keg. Hadn’t worn “fancy” clothes in a while and my blouse was a little tighter than it used to be. This seemed like a better option than potentially tearing out the seams!
Make it happen, right?

Some days I brew. Most days I clean. Swipe for the before-during-and after of a major deep clean on the HLT.

This project was descaling the hard water buildup from inside our HLT. The HLT (“hot liquor tank” is brewer-speak for the giant hot water heater I use in the brewery) can develop some pretty gnarly deposits since the water in Spokane is so high in minerals. Luckily, science can help! Using a strong acid causes the calcium carbonate buildup to break down into carbon dioxide, sodium chloride, and water. This is then easily removed and drained.

Cheers to Monday! It’s such a fun, weird thrill to see the tap list filling up with brews I’ve done. 11 total on tap right now at the Golden Handle taproom! This is probably my favorite hazy—2nd Hand Emotion. Brewed with Ales for ALS hop blend, Centennial, and Amarillo, it’s citrusy, with a tasty herbal spice underneath.

Cheers!

Emptying the fermenter after a transfer is always a gamble. Especially brews with a large dry hop addition that doesn’t want to drain. Sometimes pressure is your friend, sometimes not. Sometimes both. #brewingiscleaning taken in Golden Handle Brewing Company by @brew.calling
