At the start of this year, I was convinced I was a retired songwriter and then since May, I've unexpectedly become prolific, maybe more prolific than ever. It's a good job I have no hits because I won't be playing any of them of Sunday. by @brewisdavid

David Brewis is a Sunderland-born musician, songwriter, producer and one half of the acclaimed indie art-pop duo Field Music.

Alongside his brother Peter, David has spent the past two decades creating some of the most inventive and adventurous music to emerge from the North East. Field Music’s records are celebrated for their restless creativity, intricate arrangements and ability to combine progressive ideas with an unmistakable pop sensibility.

David has also developed a rich body of work outside Field Music, including his solo project School of Language, collaborations with artists including Paul Smith of Maxïmo Park, and a wide range of production and songwriting work. His music draws on everything from classic pop and soul to jazz, post-punk and experimental music, always with an ear for melody and a fascination with the possibilities of the recording studio.

A hugely influential figure in Sunderland’s independent music scene, David continues to write, record and perform music that is both intellectually curious and genuinely accessible, proving that adventurous music can still have great songs at its heart.

His specialist subject on Mastermind would be ‘The production techniques of 1960s British-invasion group ‘The Beatles’.’

Georgia Ruyi is a Sunderland-based singer, songwriter and musician whose music sits somewhere between intimate indie pop, alternative songwriting and the more experimental edges of contemporary music.

With a distinctive voice and an instinct for melody, Georgia’s songs balance vulnerability and confidence, combining personal storytelling with beautifully understated arrangements. Her work has quickly established her as an exciting new voice emerging from the North East’s thriving independent music scene. taken in The Bridge Hotel Vaults by @brewisdavid

Today @georgiaruyimusic releases her second single, Hypnosis. After so many years of being mired in (or strenuously trying to avoid) the rough and tumble of the music industry, watching Georgia make this incredible music, with so little regard for all those trivial machinations, has made me rethink a lot about the whys and hows of making music. And aside from that, I just love hearing her songs.

Thanks to Dave @foofighters Grohl for playing a song from my first solo record on @bbc6music. There's a sentence I never thought I'd type. He played it straight after one of my favourite Kraftwerk songs too. by @brewisdavid
