16 carriages + 10.

Wow. I can’t believe I’ve lived to see 26 years. What a blessing.

Every birthday, I find myself reflecting on the years before and just how much has changed. In the year since turning 25, I’ve experienced so many shifts. I’ve lost—but I’ve also gained. I’m a professor. I’m a young professional. I’m preparing to live independently for the first time in my life. I’m regularly seeing a therapist. I’m loved. And while there has been loss, nothing outweighs what I’ve gained.

Just ten years ago, I celebrated my 16th birthday—my first birthday after my mother’s passing. Back then, I don’t think the younger version of me could have imagined experiencing even half of what present day Bria has. 16-year-old Bria couldn’t see past wanting to end her own life. 26-year-old Bria knows there’s still so much more life to live.

I am grateful. I am blessed. Here’s to 26. šŸ„‚šŸ©· by @bria.nick

Today marks a significant milestone as I proudly graduate with my Masters in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) from the University at Albany. Reflecting on my journey, I’ve often encountered two reactions when sharing my degree choice: intrigue and curiosity or confusion about its relevance. Despite prevailing misconceptions, WGSS is about delving into societal inequalities through an intersectional lens.

Coming from a background in Criminal Justice, immersing myself into WGSS has been transformative. It’s shaped my worldview, my identity as a Black queer woman, and my career aspirations. My academic research interests lie in exploring Black women’s experiences—particularly in trauma and sexual violence—which resonate deeply with my personal experiences. I’m grateful to my WGSS professors for equipping me with invaluable insights into how intersecting identities shape our realities. This preparation has bolstered my confidence in working effectively with Black women in this capacity.

This disciplines’ emphasis on lived experiences serves as a stark reminder of the systemic injustices entrenched in our society—racism, sexism, homo/transphobia, xenophobia, classism, and more. With this degree, my mission is clear: to advocate for liberation and dismantle oppressive structures that marginalize Black and Brown communities. My journey doesn’t end here; it’s a commitment to tirelessly fight until we achieve true equality and justice. (CAPTION CONT’D IN COMMENTS) #ualbanygrad #mastersdegreešŸŽ“ by @bria.nick

On Saturday, 10/28, I was granted the opportunity to present my paper entitled, ā€œBlack Women’s Digital Spaces for Mental Healthā€ at the National Women’s Studies Association Annual Conference. My paper highlighted the portrayal of Black women in popular media through an analysis of Black women specific stereotypes, discussed existing research on the relationship between Black women, social media, and mental health, and explored the ways in which Black women have leveraged social media to educate, protest, resist, and reclaim. It was an honor to present research that is so personal to my experiences as a young Black woman in this digital age. 🄰 taken in Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor by @bria.nick
