“Upon seeing this month’s issue, I immediately felt unseen and consequently sought out my community to ground my reactions and discuss their own. On one hand I was affirmed in knowing my feelings weren’t overstated and were collective; on the other, I was disheartened by our group expectation of Dance Magazine, which is the push for white bodies: what is the future of Black visibility? Moreover, will young Black girls and boys ever receive the representation in dance they need? If we show no concern for our children, then our hopes for the future subsequently deflate; do we not see that?…I ask that Dance Magazine not let another February issue go out that is not beholden by melanin, honoring Black contribution, swollen with Black thought…In February, Blackness demands the spotlight.” This open letter addresses confusion/upset surrounding the lack of Black visibility (in dance and within organizations like @dancemagazine) and demands acknowledgement and betterment. I’m not posting a photo of the cover because I don’t want my passion to be misunderstood, as slander towards the ballet dancer represented. It’s deeper than the woman you chose to spread your intent. We all have the power to continue cycles of hurt or to enact the change we want to see; @dancemagazine, do better. So much beauty. Overflowing surreality. No cars or bikes or scooters, just people moving at the pace of ability and desire. Bells sounding on the hour, and time doesn’t feel forceful, simply a marker of lapsed experience. Abundance models abundance, while yang calls forward refusal. Art and life helix, foundations dissolving beside water’s consuming width. Nourishment. Will. Whimsy. Endurance. Regard. Collision. Engaging, thinking bodies responding to tyranny. Iterative connections tethering us at old world’s end. Grief, a sacred space with unimaginable potential just beyond tsunamis of fatality. Sensing, seeing, remembering, learning, expressing in the name of humanity. Reality marked by our say-so. 10/10 Venice. Thankful to be in-proximity and collaboration with mind-altering creators, way-makers, and explorers; to have crossed paths with a myriad of courageous and curious curators and activators; to have been apart of Koyo Kouoh’s 2026 La Biennale di Venezia: MINOR KEYS. Always in-process: processing expanse, discovering entries into “less”, incrementalizing to define prayer and praise and change. Hungry for homes within, and externalized autonomy; desire chasing wellness, by any means. Carceral, genocidal conditions make it a non-negotiable, and activated rest wholly generative. Thankful @malcolmxbetts could be in-lab with me on this day transmuting feltness and faith. What an incredible village I’ve found myself metamorphosing inside of…excited to share some stitchings next week with Tsunami, Dedrick, and Kiera at @baxarts. Gratitude and grief, simultaneous and circuitous renewal to retrograde. Thankful for life and intentionality that feed memory and continuance. Thankful for passion and dedication and trust. Can’t do this alone, not alone. Village eruptively unyielding. Honoring death with confrontation and connection and prayer. Meet Bria Bacon!⁠ ⁠• @briabacon⁠ ⁠ BAX's Spring 2026 Space Grant Resident Artist⁠ ⁠ 🔶 Bria Bacon (she/her) is a full-time performing artist and embodied movement scientist working predominantly within the frame of dance, while curious and gifted in theater, writing, storytelling, activism, science, sound-making, and singing. Born and raised on Lenapehoking lands (commonly known as New Jersey), she attended Union County Academy for Performing Arts high school, and later, Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. While completing her BFA in Dance, she was accepted into the Graduate School of Education. Although she did not pursue that pedagogical path, she had time to seed and foster multiplicities within through varied coursework: Black women writers and their texts, queer texts, creative writing practices, feminism, art history, natural sciences, behavior and psychology. Since then, she has been in dialogue with a physical, natural, and spiritual practice of transformation, memory, and autonomy. ⁠ ⁠ The tangible body and notions of the borrowed body help discover and display the dance (or the science) of the individual. Simply put, she remains curious around the belief that the body informs definitions and defines information. Thank you, @artbasel, and of course @sweatvariant! What a pleasure to be able to temporarily trade the tundra and tyranny for sunshine and shared land vibrating with life and spirit for the inaugural Art Basel Qatar in Doha. To be an embodied translator for abundance and truth in the Bin Jelmood House, and then have wide access to the galleries housing so much individuation, diasporic and anthropological insights, and indisputably, tasty brilliance, under the thoughtful direction of Wael Shawky, who structured it in a way that actually felt digestible and genuinely fulfilling in its solo gallery styling. My mind is still blown and deeply processing, and it’s not just because of the jet lag and travel. Thankful to be bringing the practice of “my tongue is a blade” to the US. Come witness our study on continuance, a frictive attempt alongside daily global and local combustions and cessations, at The Dark Festival @hudsonhallny Feb 20-21, 1-4p (3h durational) both days.
