[3 of 3] “Is the choice of no choice even a choice at all?”

That’s what Flat said to me last year, when I asked him whether the way we grew up chose our mindset, or if we chose it.

We come from places where doing more with less isn’t a mindset. It’s reality. For a long time I’ve wrestled with whether that’s a choice, or something assigned to you.

He was right to answer a question with one of his own. Even when the choice feels small, you’re still the one making it.

He taught himself to play instruments, produce, rap, and sing. Nobody handed him a way in.

Flat is one of the few people I know still doing, today, exactly what he said he’d do when we were teenagers. Not because of access. Not because a door opened for him. He built the door.

Where something was missing, he filled it himself. Tested it, refined it, evolved it, until it became something distinct. Something unmistakable. That path has taken him further than most, working with some of the best in music and entertainment, but the through line was never advantage.

It was instinct.

The same one from a driveway, when we were teenagers.

This song never gets old so here’s a new spin on it. I REALLY wanted to try it with no instruments, kinda 😉 so, can we talk? The ending is the BEST PART 🙌🏽
