It’s hard to put to words just how happy I am.

I am not a “birthday guy” by any stretch. I prefer to fly under the radar and not acknowledge how old I’m getting; however, there was a time where every April 14th, my mother would spend hours making a custom birthday cake just to celebrate another year of Brian. Such a thoughtful and loving thing to do in spite of the fact that I was too young to fully appreciate it. Sometimes I forget that I’m worth that kind of love - or maybe I just take it for granted.

Despite my passive attitude towards my own birthday, my beautiful and so very thoughtful girlfriend worked so hard behind the scenes to surprise me a few weeks early and bring together some of my most cherished friends and family - all to celebrate me. Some of you walked a few blocks, others braved three-hour-long TSA lines; but showing up, period, meant the absolute world to me. I honestly could not be more full of joy and gratitude to be surrounded by such wonderful people. I’m reminded once again of the love and support I have been given and am constantly receiving from others - meeting me in moments where I least expect it and carrying me into every new chapter in life.

This year I say goodbye to my 20s- a decade that challenged me hard and, at times, threatened to break me. In the end though, I’m coming out of these years with so much to be thankful for and knowing in my heart that I made the most of it. Thank you to everyone who made my surprise party so special. Thank you to everyone who has ever loved me enough to show up in my life. Finally, thank you @savannahhthomass for reminding me how much you and so many others care.

Almost forgot this was the whole point.

Been missing the younger days when I’d watch my favorite photographers post places like Haystack and then do my best to document whatever I could in my current environment— getting more and more creative with every effort to make it feel like other people’s work. After enough time I just got tired of the screen. I wasn’t capturing anything new or really even living in the moment; just caught up in the race to become a cool page on social media.

Over the years, I’ve unplugged a lot. Call it an aversion to comparison, an escape from public scrutiny, or flatout just being burned out— I don’t have the juice or the financial freedom to keep up with a lot of my old hobbies. Bills have to get paid and cameras and flights are evermore expensive.

Finally making it out to a destination that younger me would’ve lost his mind over with no camera other than my painfully average iphone 12 (with some HEAVY lifting by the Adobe Lightroom app) and no models other than some of the people I love most reminded me of how the rat race of being a creative simply cannot compare to the feeling of just being present.

Brian and Amanda, I am extraordinarily grateful for you and this trip. Sav and I love you to pieces and I wish you both a lifetime of love, being present, and just taking it all in. Don’t let the grind stop you from living your best! taken in Haystack Rock - Cannon Beach by @briancloss
