Welcome back, Natalie. Cellist Natalie Helm returns to ensembleNEWSRQ on October 5, joining Roomful of Teeth and enSRQ for Caroline Shaw’s This Might Also Be a Form of Dreaming. Drawing from Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely: An American Lyric, Shaw’s work begins with two deceptively simple questions: How do we connect? And what are we connecting? Roomful of Teeth is joined by Samantha Bennett, viola; Natalie Helm, cello; Asher Carlson, bass clarinet; George Nickson, percussion; and Sam Nelson, piano. “You do you, and I’ll do me, and together we’ll be us.”, Dolly Parton. We all know Dolly was our beloved philanthropic juggernaut, artist, and fearless champion for the marginalized, the children, and people of every color (coat of many colors). At Upward Notes we recognize her commitment to mental wellbeing. “It’s hard work being happy.” Dolly was neither naive, nor ignorant to pressures of life. Dolly stood in the breach, with a smile, a book, and honest love for all. Grieving is natural, and each one of us have our own way of grieving. Some will laugh. Some will cry. Some will remember. Giving space to grieve and support for each unique human reaction is an important component of mental wellbeing. Thank you, Dolly! You’re an example to us all. 💜💚💛🌻🌼 Upward Notes by @brianjboyd
We’re excited to share that the Sarasota performance of Music for New Bodies is coming soon. Drawn from the poetry of Jorie Graham. Composed by Matthew Aucoin, directed by Peter Sellars, and conducted by George Nickson, the performance brought together ensembleNEWSRQ and an extraordinary group of singers and musicians at the Sarasota Opera House. In collaboration with Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota. While we’re rolling out Season 11, we’re also finishing the performance film and working through a remarkable archive from Music for New Bodies: behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews, hundreds of photographs by Dylan Jon Wade Cox, and films by Brian J Boyd and Sam Nelson. There’s a lot more to share. Arts organizations of all genres, every branch of the US military, farmers, hairdressers, photographers, doctors, across the political spectrum, the religious spectrum, blue collar, white collar, have all cried and paid tribute to the legendary artist, humanitarian, leader, comedian, and beautiful Dolly Parton. by @brianjboyd
RIP Dolly! You were my first love (👀) and then I forgot about you, and then I discovered what a wonderful human you are, and then I discovered what a truly beautiful artist you are. Your soul in this world will be missed. Safe travels by @brianjboyd

George Nickson explains why twelve ordinary notes have given us centuries of extraordinary music. Turns out the ingredients were never the interesting part. J.S. Bach. Steve Reich. Christopher Cerrone. The same twelve notes. Walk into any serious kitchen and you'll find many of the same ingredients. Salt. Butter. Flour. Fire. No one remembers the recipe because of the pantry. They remember what the chef did with it. Music works the same way. Every Western composer begins with the same twelve notes. The ingredients stay the same—it's the alchemy, the preparation, and the imagination that transform them. #newmusic #music #ensrq #foodforfoodies by @brianjboyd
5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Every great performance begins somewhere. We're kicking off the summer by looking back at one of the defining moments of our 10th season—Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians at the Sarasota Opera House. Over the next few months, we'll be sharing performance highlights, rehearsals, interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and a look at the people and ideas that make ensembleNewSRQ what it is. Whether you've been with us for ten seasons or you're discovering us for the first time... Welcome to the groove. 🎥 More to come. #ensrq #ensrq10 #newmusic #newmusicvideo #stevereich by @brianjboyd
