George Nickson explains why twelve ordinary notes have given us centuries of extraordinary music.

Turns out the ingredients were never the interesting part.

J.S. Bach. Steve Reich. Christopher Cerrone.

The same twelve notes.

Walk into any serious kitchen and you'll find many of the same ingredients. Salt. Butter. Flour. Fire.

No one remembers the recipe because of the pantry.

They remember what the chef did with it.

Music works the same way.

Every Western composer begins with the same twelve notes. The ingredients stay the same—it's the alchemy, the preparation, and the imagination that transform them.

That’s not true. I compose Western classical music that occasionally uses microtones.

I often feel like I am the only person, in a world of microtonalists etc etc, who genuinely prefers 12tet (with, sure fine, slight tuning deviations depending on style). I love 12tet!!
