Concept art dump!

Here are some of my favorite drawings I’ve done for my bizarre and hard to explain day job. These are all concept thumbnails for famous YouTubers that no one under the age of 21 really knows about. It’s very fun to do this job and it also makes me feel 1,000 years old 🎨👨🏻‍🎨👴🏼 by @brianmcgo

I landed in LA 10 years ago today. I only came here with a carry on, a backpack, and $0 of debt.

When I first got here, my landlord’s husband said “Welcome to Hell” and a Lyft driver told me I had to live her 10 yrs to say I’m “from here”, so I guess im now officially an LA Devil 👹🔥

Living here is a constant challenge but I love the people, the food, and the feeling that there’s something great on the horizon, like the mountains after a too rare rain by @brianmcgo

I couldn’t have made Name That Headliner without a TON of help. Particularly from Brian McGovern for doing all of the art. He was with me every step of the way and was HUGE for shaping the look and feel of the cards. There were two huge things that I wanted for the design:

-Each decade card to feel like a concert poster from the decade it represented

-The box to stand out against usual card games

Brian crushed these aspects and then some

It’s actually been pretty wild going back through and looking at all of the steps of the design process.

So for each decade card, I pulled a bunch of reference posters for shows at the time that really felt like they exemplified the decade. We looked at A TON of concert posters for this game. Show posters are an enormously valuable form of art and love that we got to incorporate so much of that into the game. I’ll do more of a deep dive for each decade, but here’s what the game looked like at every step of the process

The first photo is the earliest prototype that I printed on Avery name badges and carried around in this little Starbucks tin. There also used to be this weird card draw element to the game that ended up being kind of clunky.

The next two pics are the front and the back of the cards after the first printing, which honestly looked great out of the gate.

Fourth pic was when I was like “oh shit this is a real game! I loved this box and all of the cards but ended up having to change the name from “Headliners” to “Name That Headliner” because there was another game on The Game Crafter already called Headliners. WHATEVER.

The last two pics are the big box design and the little box design that’s available now! The big box is great and, if somehow this does well, will be available in case people want some expansion packs for the decades and need a bigger box for all of the cards! But until then, the nice 102 card pack will do rightly and tightly. by @brianmcgo

Another Timelapse of a poster commission. The inspo was “Draw everyone like Universal Monsters” which was very fun. Did you know the Phantom of the Opera is considered a universal monster?!? Doesn’t seem totally fair tbh because he’s just an ugly dude that’s good at singing right? Anyways you should @menudocomedy tonight at @ucbtla !!!! by @brianmcgo

They asked for something spooky so I had to do a reprint of this ITYSL inspired design. All printed by me on up-cycled and vintage t shirts and ready to ship or to pick up in Los Angeles. Will accept bones or worms but dollars are preferred. Only making about 20 of these so get them before they DISAPPEAR (a classically spooky thing to do.) by @brianmcgo
