Am I the sole product of the 90s country to 2000s emo pipeline?

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I have watched/read every #LittleWomen adaptation that has ever crossed my awareness. It was the first book I remember LOVING as a kid, when I came across a copy in my 4th grade classroom library. Writing my own take on it has always been a dream of mine, and when I started researching Lizzie Alcott (the real life sister upon which Beth is based) last summer, I knew I wanted to write something about illness narratives and mortality (lol one of the main things almost all my writing circles around) from the perspective of Beth. Only now during my @playwrightsunion "Write a Screenplay in a Month" challenge did I hit upon an approach to the story that I got really really excited about and have not been able to put down. It presents Beth's experience with scarlet fever and her eventual death (a big plot point you'll see in every Little Women adaptation) as a perpetual timeloop that she can't escape from. She just keeps dying and waking up at the start of Little Women again, to get sick again and die again. It's ended up being, for me, a real exploration of grief and PTSD and that out-of-step feeling you feel among your peers when you're a young person who has had to face your own mortality a lot.

I'm updating it every day and it's bringing me a lot of joy.

I've really lost interest in posting updates about myself but here's a roundup of a lot of really cute pictures of my dog. He's a very distracting coworker and I love him. by @brianna_bear

What a fascinating fusion of my interests! A demo I wrote was at GDC so I spent the week bumming around talking with other game designers about not just video games but board games, card games, LARPing, and the importance of play. Super inspiring to see creative and crazy indie game demos pushing the bounds of both new and retro technology... my mind definitely drifts to the live theatrical implementations of some of these very clever interactive experiences, though I also find myself talking just as much about what narrative video games can learn from immersive theater.

Didn't at all mind that the trip also gave me a chance to check out @cactusham's Tiny Chef planetarium show at @calacademy !! taken in San Francisco, California by @brianna_bear

Ended 2025 and started 2026 in Mexico with a lot of new experiences. Befriended some bees. Swam in some bodies of water. Ryan kept me alive when my 310 days of Duolingo failed me. The horrors persist but so do I. by @brianna_bear

It’s time for my annual self-aggrandizing end-of-year wrap up!

I don’t have kids or anything so I mostly measure time in the growth of my wee baby creative projects.

STILL HARVEY STILL - I found out in January it was nominated for an Oregon Book Award, and in April somehow I actually won????! The script was also a second rounder at the Austin Film Festival.

WE WILL BE TAKING NO FURTHER QUESTIONS ABOUT CULT AUTEUR STANLEY KUBRICK - my commission for the Visionary Award. I wrote it in February and had two staged readings this year, one with the Playwrights Union (June) and one with Pacific Resident Theater (September).
Also the real life academic who served as my primary source for research and inspiration on this project told me he “Loved It!” So.

THE LUCKY BREAK - my musical got some love! A reading at San Diego Musical Theater in March, followed by a song showcase at The Foundation for New American Musicals MUSI-CAL concert of new musicals. In August, it was a finalist at the New Musical Project, where a few songs were performed in Boulder, Colorado. This November, we also had a few songs appear in a showcase for the musical theater students at Florida State University.

BRIANNA VS. BRIANNA - a new project in the works with my friend and co-writer also named Brianna Barrett. Finalist for the Geffen Playhouse Writers Room in August. Since then, we’ve pivoted and written it as a feature film — and it turns out I love writing screenplays now?! We are currently quarterfinalists for an indie film incubator - crossing our fingers!

SELF LOVE - the play I wrote last year was a finalist this June at the Texas State New American Play Festival AND a finalist for the SheLA Summer Theater Festival.

MYSTERIES AT THE BALL - the immersive show I wrote last year had another run this April at Tapestries in San Jose.

UGLY CRY CHRISTMAS - the Christmas show I wrote last year also had another reading this year - this time at Bellingham TheatreWorks.

Anyway. My dog is perfect so here's mostly pictures of him. taken in 2025 by @brianna_bear
