My father Larry was a selfless, calming, caring man. A thoughtful man of integrity, compassion and moderation, with a drive for success, not only in business, but in the family he so passionately cared for. He was consistently present. I could not help but think this picture is what my father would want here. His license plate is very close to reality. He was the “REELDEAL”. He was suffering in the end yet he was always thinking of his family. Wanting to keep things in order, concerned about all of us looking after one another in his pending absence. Hoping we keep the bond he worked so hard to create, as one. After his last fall, on his way to hospice from the hospital, he asked “if we could make a stop home to make sure everything was in order”. His entire adult life revolved around his wife, 5 children and grandchildren. He was an amazing buisness man as well, who always guided me with basic principles on how to get things done: “Don’t wait for it to happen, go make it happen” “Put the work in and results will follow” “Being early is being on time” Just some of the quotes he lived by and instilled in me. In a time when these characteristics are so difficult to uphold, I embrace this moment to honor and reflect my father’s legacy. For Sale: Amon Marshall Homestead. When they took this place on, nobody could find the pond. It was under years of invasive vine and poison ivy and fallen trees. People looking at the old listing photographs could not see that there was water down there at all. It’s back now. So are the antique rhododendrons, which had been swallowed whole by the ivy and were not pulled out but cut free, and which bloomed that same summer as if to make a point. The house is the Amon Marshall Homestead, put up in 1769 and added onto by generations after that. Hand hewn beams, still carrying what they were cut to carry. Wide plank floors. A hearth deep enough for a beehive oven. A fanlight over the front door. Everything that could be saved was saved, and the things that could not be were replaced by someone who cared what they were replacing. Nothing here is staged. Every light, mirror, antique was found for this house over several years, and there were nights during the work when the developer simply stayed over, after the crews had gone, to learn what the place sounds/feels like when nothing is happening.
