This week we are taking a look at liath from Down native Michael Speers for our wine of the week.

Full video up this eve

Grenache Noir from old vines growing on rolled calcareous pebbles, grown by Valentin Bourret of Domaine la Rouge Jouvence, in la-Baume-de-Transit. Harvested by hand, the bunches went straight to the press. The wine fermented in tank before racking to a 228L cask to age for a year. In September 2024, Michael pumped the juice onto the pressed skin of Grenache Blanc, and after three days of maceration, the wine was returned to cask. A month later the wine was bottled. Clarity and freshness on the nose, with tangerine zest, rosemary, and earl grey. The palate has all the volume of direct press grenache noir Grenache noir, with fine tannins from the short maceration.

Liath, the Irish for grey, is a play on the a local gris de Provence, a wine from Grenache Noir that’s colour is too pallid to be called a rosé. This was Michael’s attempt to correct the record, though the maceration with the marc of Grenache Blanc has sent this wine in a new direction. taken in plugd by @brianswines

We're very excited to be playing in Cork for the first time this Saturday 26th of September for @eistradio 📻

We'll be joining @carolyndipanda to broadcast a live set from @plugdrecords
and @brianswines from 7 to 11 pm 📡

We have loads of gems that we found in our recent trip to Colombia that we can't wait to give a spin to so expect lots of cumbia (of course), salsa and plenty of Afro-Carribbean rhythms too 🔥

We're delighted to be getting involved with Éist radio and will be starting a regular slot soon 🎙️

Shout out to our parcero @jaaph_jaaph for inviting us and organising 🙌 taken in Cork, Republic of Ireland by @brianswines

The varieties...

Terret Gris & blanc are two of the three colour variations of Terret that are indigenous to the south of France(noir is the other). Relatively neutral in expression, but with a bright acidity, terret is most commonly used in blends with varieties like clairette and Picpoul, or in the production of vermouth. Ugni Blanc (trebbiano) is also grown widely in the south, most of what's grown goes to Armagnac and Cognac. In the right hands, these varieties can give us a serious and compelling window into the historical identity of southern French wine, so if you see them on the list at winebar its worth imvestigatimg!

Both terret and Ugni blanc bud late and ripen late, eliminating for the most part the threat of spring frosts in the Languedoc, and maintaining their acidity all the way through until harvest. The neutral varieties here allow us to feel how the geology of Caux finds a voice in the wine. Here they offer us a clear sense of how Joe's differing approach to débourbage in 2020 and 2022 has shaped the structure and expression of these fascinating wines. taken in plugd by @brianswines

For anyone curious to understand how the decisions winemakers make during vinification can alter the expression of the resulting wine, this week's wine of the week, or wines of the week, are a real treat to taste side by side.

Débourbage is not something we hear talked about too often(at least i don't) outside of at the cellar of a winemaker, yet this stage of winemaking can have such significant influence on the structure and expression of the wine that ends up in our glass.

I recently tasted two vintages of les Bories Jefferies' la Pierre de Sisyphe side by side, the 2020(no débourbage) and the 2022 (racked off bourbes and gross lees toward the end of fermentation, aged on fine lees), and the experience is why both vintages of this are sharing the stage for this week's wine of the week.

You can drink the last bottles of la Pierre de Sisyphe '20 at @tarlabelfast, at the winebar this weekend, or pick up a bottle @dodistockroom or via the link in bio

You can see the full wine of the week profile on my page or by searching la pierre de sisyphe on youtube taken in plugd by @brianswines

Looking back at our first night at #CorkonaForkFest last Wednesday at the Farm to Fork Chef Collaboration at Glenbrook Farm. The farm just so happened to double as a watch party for Wednesday evening's solar eclipse!

A great evening at this exclusive 4-course pop-up dinner in @glenbrookfarmcork rustic calf shed, curated by Chef Sarah Roche @sazzaroche. Every ingredient sourced directly from Glenbrook Farm and Cork Rooftop Farm, epitomising farm-to-fork and zero-mile dining. The event included fabulous drinks from @brianswines, @rebelcitydistillery and @blarneybrewingco.
