The other day, @the_amazing_80s asked me if there had been any attempt at a cartoon about Wesley (such as there was for Punky Brewster or Gary Coleman). I doubted whether the character would’ve been popular enough with kids in the early seasons to warrant a cartoon. But towards the END of the show… I supposed that might have been possible. I started to picture an animated sequel, made in the early ‘90s, about teenage Wesley as a reformed troublemaker. Although he was now out of the house, Mr. Belvedere would still be a regular presence as Wesley’s conscience, the so-called angel on his shoulder, keeping his mischievous impulses in check.

These character designs were done by me in Adobe Fresco. My freehand drawing is rusty, as I only recently started working with a tablet and stylus (I know, I know), and I have a lot to learn about the app, so this was a good exercise. I hope you like my take.

Also, by a strange coincidence, shortly after this idea came up, the work of @funky_brewster_85 appeared in my feed via @caseyellison76. They had a similar concept for a ‘90s Punky Brewster sequel, so shout out to another visionary 😉

When is the right time to bring an editor onto your film? Before you shoot? During production? Or once you’ve got all the footage in the can?

We had a great conversation with Bryce Beckham about this very question, and now that we’re deep into post-production on Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, we’re realizing it’s a question that keeps coming up.

We’ve finished our edit, and now we’re bringing on our VFX artists and colorist. And once again we’re asking ourselves, when’s the best time to get these people involved?

Turns out there’s a whole lot to learn about making a movie AFTER you’ve made the movie.

When is the right time to bring on an editor? Or maybe the better question is… when does an editor want to be brought onto a project?

Our interview with Brice Beckham gave us a surprisingly interesting answer. While it’s always great to bring an editor on early if you can, what Brice really loves is solving the editing puzzle. Taking all the footage, finding the story, and figuring out how to make it all work together—that’s part of the fun. It’s the Rubik’s Cube that every editor gets to solve.

Editing a movie of any size is pure magic. Fight us on it.

We won an award! Our pilot, BATSHIT, starring @marisa.coughlan made its festival premiere at @seriesfest in Denver, Colorado. @bricebeckham and @dfickas took home the award for Best Writing in an Independent Comedy Pilot. The festival was amazing and we were honored to be honored. We also met a ton of fun new LA friends and decided to put together an encore screening of our collective works. We would love to see you all Wednesday evening at The Broadwater Main Stage (@thebroadwaterla) for a SeriesFest Encore in LA (not affiliated with SeriesFest). Here is a trailer for our pilot BATSHIT starring @marisa.coughlan. It will be making its debut at @seriesfest in early May. I couldn’t be more proud of this project, not just because it is ridiculously silly but also because it brought together an incredible @drama34prod team both on screen and off. This is also the project that brought me into the @directorsguild which I am forever grateful for, especially to DGA champion and First AD extraordinaire @johnny_ballgame28. And, of course, none of this stuff would ever happen without my Drama 3/4 writing, producing and editing partner @bricebeckham. Here’s to more Batshit crazy adventures!
