Join us this weekend for the closing reception and artist talk of Interplay and Echoes | Sunday, October 18, 3 – 5 PM

These three artists use layers of translucency and structure to make works that imply another spatial dimension.  With color, gestural mark-making, reflected light and shadow, they bring observational references into abstraction. The elements that make up the images overlap, intersect, coalesce, and disperse, leading to new readings and interpretations. The works have in common an interplay between foreground and background, resulting in echoes and conversations between what is sharply defined and what is barely seen or slightly obscured. All three artists are founding members of the Brickbottom Artist Building.

✨Dear Readers ~ Save the Date✨

Our next reading will be on Saturday, August 22nd! We now have an extended time of 7pm to 8:30pm to allow for more people to read, which we have found that we need as we have grown! 🌱

We want to give as many people the chance to read as possible! Sign up when you arrive.

We will be meeting at our home in the Brickbottom Artists Association gallery at 1 Fitchburg Street, C111 Somerville, MA 02143 🤍

As usual we will have complimentary refreshments! 🥂

This month we step into the pool of memory. We think of memory as a cave, an attic, a shore. Memory is a space, a place of recollection, the result and process of remembering. Memories are the objects of this process: kept, buried, lost, treasured. This is where our mind meets the page. Memory can be a catalog of our experiences. Linear or not. It is inherently associative: all places, sounds, faces, names, scents, flavors. All associated with specific ages, times, places, and people in our lives. The strangest and simplest things can stimulate our memory, and transport us to another time and place. The scope of this theme is vast, but we recommend starting small. It is as simple as picking up a treasured object or photograph of meaning. Where, when, how, who do you think of? What did that time in your life taste like, smell like, feel like? Follow your nose, and see where you go! 🌀 taken in Brickbottom Artists Association, Inc by @brickbottomartists

“Faces, Places & Spaces,” on view through August 23 @somervillemuseum, is not a traditional visual art exhibition with paintings, photographs, or sculptures. Instead, it’s a visual representation of the #ARTSTAYSHERE Coalition movement: preventing artist displacement and creating more inventory of affordable workspaces across Massachusetts.

“The exhibition, reviewing our art space advocacy efforts in Massachusetts since 2020, invites viewers to learn about artist displacement, its causes (development, change of owner and extreme rent hikes) and its impact on artists, musicians, residents, and communities,” writes founding volunteer Ami Bennitt (@bennittami) in our latest issue. “Through a handful of different components, Faces, Places, & Spaces outlines @art_stays_here’s advocacy projects, introduces visitors to 66 artists and musicians in their studios, and invites the community to take part in art space advocacy on site in real time.”

This Tuesday, July 14 at 6 p.m., @brickbottomartists Studios artist @randalthurston will present “A Narrative History of Somerville’s Brickbottom Neighborhood” at the museum, which is located at 1 Westwood Road, #SomervilleMA.

Read Bennitt’s complete #ARTSTAYSHERE #artsadvocacy feature in the July/August 2026 issue of @artscopemagazine, available free of charge at partnering museums, galleries and art centers throughout New England and via mail order or digital purchase for online access at artscopemagazine.com/subscribe/ by @brickbottomartists
