Open Studios Revisited

If you missed the North Shields Open Studios weekend, here is one of the featured creative businesses that was drawing in the crowds on Howard Street.

@brickthis specialises in creating custom LEGO models, including architecture and vehicles. The impressive exhibition models can often take weeks or months to build, and they also sell a selection of fantastic kits, many with a distinctly north east theme.

Brick This | Steve Mayes

There aren’t many towns where you’ll find a professional independent LEGO artist tucked away in a studio.

Steve Mayes is the artist behind Brick This, creating incredibly detailed LEGO models and commissions from his Howard Street studio.

His practice is a brilliant reminder that creativity doesn’t have to fit neatly into the traditional idea of painting, sculpture or galleries.

Wow! There’s so much to see at North Shields’ first Open Studio weekend.

There are art studios and pop-up exhibitions to explore all over town.
TODAY, Saturday 26th and TOMORROW, Sunday 27th Sept, 11am - 4pm.

You can pick up an Open Quay map from @glasshousetgh on Albion Road, @theglobegallery on the corner of Saville Street & Howard Street, and @theloadingbaynorthshields

The sun is shining, so get out there and start exploring!

Amazing gig last night seeing Mike D at King Street Social Club in North Shields! Here’s my LEGO version of the facade of the building which is really helping put North Shields on the map thanks to the efforts of @areyouaffiliatedkingstreet @manpowermusic. Built this last year but it needs a home. by @brickthis

Saw one of these @thamesrockets for real during recent trip to London. Not quite the same vessel as my LEGO version but good to see. These are purchasable as an optional extra when you book a trip. Great example of the custom LEGO kits I produce by @brickthis

Another batch of these shipped to Windcat Workboats. These are a great example of the custom kits I create, and for a sector that particularly interests me. These vessels help maintain offshore wind turbines. All genuine LEGO pieces with some custom printing. These aren’t for sale to the general public but drop me a line if you’re interested in commissioning your own custom LEGO kit. #customlego #bespokelego #legoboat #windcat by @brickthis

A custom LEGO kit for @rockhallux in Luxembourg. A pleasure to work on and one of my favourite recent projects. As with all my kits all parts are genuine LEGO and comes with a printed instructions booklet and branded boxes. #legoarchitect #customlegoset #rockhal taken in Rockhal by @brickthis

What a year! Loads of fantastic projects from a recreation of Derby Cathedral Quarter that took 8 months to complete, to an off-shore substation and custom kits of ships, speedboats, buildings, heat pumps, ambulances and castles. Thanks to all my clients this year, looking forward to lots more next year! #legoartist #legoarchitect #2025 by @brickthis
