Agriculture Minister Wille Aucamp has just signed a protocol that grants South African cherry producers access to China, the world’s leading importer of cherries.

And the cherry on top? 0% tariffs!

Aucamp has called the deal “groundbreaking”, marking the first time that two market access protocols have been signed with China in under a year.

The protocol is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the country. Not only does China eat a lot of cherries (the country imported about 586,900 tonnes last year at the value of R52.8 billion), but the deal has opened up discussions about expanding market access for South African agricultural products.
