Not ready to foster? You can still make a difference. ❤️

For this Spanish-speaking foster parent, helping starts with three simple things:

Patience. Understanding. Heart. 🌱

Don’t take things personally, be patient, and most importantly, help from the heart.

Tener paciencia, no tomar las cosas personales y hacerlo de corazón.

Sometimes supporting children and families doesn’t require a foster license. It starts with how we choose to show up for others.🫶

What surprised you about becoming a foster parent? ❤️

For this foster mom, the answer was: a whole lot.

Fostering introduced her to behaviors, experiences, and challenges she hadn’t encountered while raising her own children.

But it also taught her something just as important: understanding changes everything. 🌱

Every child comes with their own story, experiences, and needs. Learning to understand where a child is coming from can create more patience, compassion, and space for connection.

Sometimes fostering stretches you in ways you never expected. And sometimes, that growth changes you, too. 🫶

What happens before a child is placed in a foster home? 🤝

Whenever possible, Brighter Futures likes to arrange a meet and greet between the child or youth and potential foster families before placement.

Why? Because there’s so much you can learn from meeting someone in person that you simply can’t see on paper. 👀

These visits give foster families an opportunity to get to know the child, understand their personality, and consider how they might fit into their home.

Sometimes there may be multiple family visits. Sometimes there may be just one.

The goal is the same: help create the best possible match for the child. 💙

Because finding the right fit is about more than a placement. It’s about creating a home where a child can feel safe, supported, and understood. 🌱

What lessons have you learned from fostering a child? ❤️

The most important part of building connection? Listening. 👂🏽💙

You may have to walk more than a mile in a child’s shoes before you truly understand their story.

The more a child sees that you’re willing to walk alongside them, listen without judgment, and meet them where they are, the more comfortable they may feel opening up and building trust. 🌱

Sometimes, being part of the village starts with simply noticing. 💙

One evening, Yvette walked into Brighter Futures carrying a box full of backpacks and bags for our youth.

She was simply a community member who noticed a need and decided to help. 🎒

For children moving between homes, having something as simple as a backpack to carry their belongings can mean more than we realize. It can provide dignity, comfort, and a sense of having something that belongs to them.

Yvette reminded us of something important:

It really does take a village to support a child. 🌱

You don’t have to work in foster care to make a difference. Sometimes, you just have to notice a need and decide to show up.

So, how does the placement process work? 🏡

Once you’re a licensed foster family with Brighter Futures, the placement process happens through a series of steps designed to make sure the child is matched with a home that can meet their needs. 🌱

1️⃣ Referrals come in
Brighter Futures receives placement referrals from the state.

2️⃣ Open homes are contacted
Licensed families learn about the child’s needs and behaviors to determine whether the placement could be a good fit.

3️⃣ A placement meeting takes place
If the family feels it’s a good match and the inquiry moves forward, the team coordinates a placement meeting.

4️⃣ Placement
When everything is approved and ready, the child is welcomed into their new foster home. ❤️

Every placement is about more than finding an available bed. It’s about finding the right environment where a child can feel safe, supported, and cared for.

Telephone Confessions | The Support Behind Foster Care 📞

One thing people often misunderstand about foster care is how much support actually goes into caring for a child. 💙

Foster care isn’t simply about providing a place for a child to stay. There are trained professionals, foster parents, caseworkers, and support systems working together to help children build skills, feel supported, and navigate difficult circumstances.

And that support extends to families, too. 🌱
