Yayoi Kusama, Pioneer. RIP.
For my dissertation I studied female and trans pioneers of the major art movements of the 20th century who received no or little recognition. Kusama finally became one of the world's best known artists, but the path was hard-won.
Pictured here: Aggregation: One Thousand Boats Show (1963), her first major installation in New York. A rowboat covered in countless white phallic protrusions, set within a room wallpapered with repeated images of the same boat, two white high-heeled shoes at the base.
Andy Warhol attended the exhibition at the Gertrude Stein Gallery and later recalled: "Yayoi, what is this? It's fantastic!"
Kusama later reflected: "A few years later, Warhol papered the ceiling and walls at Leo Castelli Gallery; it was plainly an appropriation of my Thousand Boats Show." by @brigitte_dangelo
